Château de France has improved dramatically in recent years, especially its white wines. With the 2003, packed with wood toast flavors and full of ripe fruit from the warm vintage, there is richness and dense citrus and tropical fruit flavors. With its spice it should develop well over the next few years.

88—90 Barrel sample. Soft, open, the wood giving roundness to a spicy, rich wine. It will develop quickly.

85-87 Barrel sample. A wine where the tannins seem to have had a field day. They are all over the place, leaving no room at all for fruit or acidity. Will the fruit show? Only time will tell.

89—91 Barrel sample. A finely constructed wine, giving ripe blackberry fruits, always with a layer of dry tannins, but full and with some richness. Acidity gives freshness.

The Thomassin family, which runs this estate with its patriotic name, produces wines that need a while to deliver completely. This 2007 is typical, in that the wood is currently dominant, covering the fresh citrus and pineapple flavored fruits. It needs to balance out. Give it at least two years, preferably more.

91-93 Barrel sample. Full, ripe fruit, showing pear jucie, some wood spice and ripeness. It feels fat, full-bodied.

91-93 Barrel sample. Firm tannins, solid chunky, but with good ripe fruits and sweet tannins. The wine has structure, some bitter coffee, and fresh acidity.
