The magnificent medieval château at Lamarque has seen a remarkable turnaround in its wine fortunes. This 2004 is less successful than the previous vintages, too dry, too dominated by wood for the fruit. But there is power and structure there, so it may well develop.

88-90 Barrel sample. High toast, balanced by strong, vivid black fruit flavors, work well together here. The wine edges towards concentration, but there is still a final light touch of fresh berries.

85-87 A dark, solid tannic wine, which has dryness rather than fruit. It is dense and firm, dominated by wood.

88-90 Barrel sample. There is a high level of new wood, toast that dominates both the aroma and the flavors. It gives the wine a hard-edged feel at this stage.

88-90 Soft, ripe, smooth, with delicious acidity and berry fruits. Some good density.

90-92 Barrel sample. Dry, intense tannins dominate this wine. The fruit is going to come through later, but together the two will give it a powerful, heavy structure .
