A disappointing effort from a normally reliable producer, Château de Ségriès’s Tavel is still pleasant enough, but it comes across as slightly heavy and confected while delivering bold cherry-berry fruit.

Selected entirely from clay-and-limestone soils (other parcels go into the estate’s Côtes-du-Rhône), this is a rich, plummy wine. Dark fruit carries an undercurrent of savory mushrooms backed by firm structure. Drink now–2010+.

Not quite as impressive as the wonderful 1998, this blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah features solid black-cherry fruit and hints of smoke but seems a bit compact, with firm structure. Still, the persistent finish and reasonable depth suggest it will show better in a couple of months.

A pleasant, if somewhat light offering, featuring bright Grenache fruit highlighted by red cherries and hints of black pepper. Finishes with a touch of stemmy astringency that adds needed grip.

A bit unexpressive on the nose, but this blend of Ugni Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul is nicely fruited and broad on the palate without being heavy. Spicy and fresh on the finish.

Really fresh and lively, this Tavel balances ripe berry flavors with citrusy lime notes and a dry, minerally finish. Easy to drink on its own, but also versatile at the table.

Textbook Côtes-du-Rhône filled with plums and spice. A slightly mushroomy note adds nuance and depth to its fresh, fruity approachability. Finishes with peppery spice. Drink now–2008.

Fresh, juicy red cherry fruit is accented by some pleasant spice and sweaty leather notes. It’s warm and mouthfilling, with a touch of coffee grounds peaking through on the finish.
