Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Often viewed as worthy of a run with the First Growths in the ’61 vintage; very deep and rich nose, spicy and peppery, caramel, chocolate, very perfumed and aromatic; sweet and ripe in the mouth, powerful flavors; black fruits mixing with damp black earth; lots of dry tannins in the mid-mouth, but not over the top yet; long finish with rich fruit, cassis and black fruits, blackberries that are almost compote, dry and earthen. (18.5/20)

Very sweet and ripe nose, floral, rich, lots of cassis and tar, sweet and aromatic with good presence of gravel and earth; sweet and lush, spicy and peppery; surprisingly deep and rich in the mouth with more fat than I would have expected; a bit coarse and earthen, but overall quite good; long finish that does begin to break down after a while in the glass. (18/20) The same wine served at the Commanderie Consulate dinner from a different case were consistent in most respects.

A property that has seen its ups and downs in recent times, the 1970 was never one of its better wines; the nose is still good, exhibiting sweet black fruit aromas of ripe plums and cherries mixed with hints of persimmon and quince; in the mouth, however, the wine shows little, the flavors are short and flat with dry tannins most dominant; what fruit there is receding rapidly, and the wine is quickly headed to the scrap heap of dry, wooden wines that define this over-hyped vintage at this juncture of their life. Never one of my favorite ‘82s, this wine was no exception; it took two bottles to get a clean bottle and then I was reminded that the nose on this wine is sweet but clumsy, lacking the elegance and refinement of many of the best ‘82s, there is plenty of rich fruit and tar and earth tones, but there is no magnetic field to attract the senses; in the mouth, the wine is ripe and sweet, but somewhat clumsy with heavy-handed flavors that lack the integration and finesse of some of the later vintages from this same property. Big nose, lots of sweet aromas that climb out of the glass, beetroot, tar, cassis, raspberry and blueberry scents complete a complex and compelling nose; first taste in the mouth is loaded with sweet, ripe fruit that exhibits big structure; this becomes more apparent as some of the big intense tannins that lurk in the shadows emerge; this wine is still forming and probably will need an additional four or five years to reach its full flavor spectrum; quite a statement now, though. Like its ’96 cousin, the wine has a powerful and deep nose, sweet and rich, peppery, lots of black fruit and tar aromas, layered and complex; dense and rich in the mouth, sweet with tons of black fruit on the palate; but nicely balanced with crabapple and cranberry tartness that enlivens the mix; long finish with grainy tannins; I felt that in the debate between the ’95 and ’96, the ’96 has the edge with more polished and elegant refinement in the mouth, but it’s close. Huge nose, powerful and intense with layers of ripe fruit, chocolate, tar, blackberries, black fruits, deep and complex, layered with sweetness and gobs of fruit; huge entry with intense fruit and layers of flavor; forward at this time, but with complex flavors of chocolate, blackberry jam, plums, cherries; licorice and tar, lots of herbs; hint of smoke; powerful and gripping wine with lots of concentration; elegant but with power; this is a new style of Beaucaillou with loads of extraction; long finish, this is elegant and perhaps the best Beaucaillou I have tasted. This was the aperitif wine of the evening, and showed quite well; still very young and immature, the wine is mostly about tannins and earth-toned fruit right now, and the elements have not knit together; the wine is lighter and thinner than some of the more impressive vintages, but has a pleasant tapestry of classic Bordeaux flavors; I don’t suspect that this will emerge as a butterfly though as it seems that the dry tannins are quite massive and assertive, and I don’t think there is enough fruit for the long haul.
