The younger brother of Lafite, Duhart-Milon exhibits deliciously pure fruit. The wine is deceptively soft, because under the black jelly fruits, there are also dusty, dry, firm tannins. At the end, though, it is the vibrant fruit which lingers.

86-88 The big, serious, solid fruit is typical of many Pauillacs this year. Here the fruit is sustained by richness and very fine tannins, not too dry.

Often outshone alongside its stablemate, Lafite, Duhart-Milon seems to be coming into its own. It is rich and polished, dominated by new wood and soft, ripe fruit. The flavors are black currant, more jelly than fruit, but the power is also here, coming with the tannins and the intense, fresh acidity.

91-93 There is a certain toughness her. The dense and firm character gives a solid, textured wine, packed with acidity. Foursquare and chunky.

The character of this wine, a straight line of tannins and black currant fruit flavors, is the model of a classic Pauillac. It has all the structure as well as some austerity and severity at this stage in its development. But the fruit texture is rich enough, dried fruits and spice followed by licorice and bitter chocolate. Age for five years at least.

91-93 Barrel sample. Structured and juicy at the same time, this is a fragrantly fruity wine. It is rich, but with intense freshness as well. The final taste brings in a more firm, dark texture.

A wine that has freshness, some wood and a soft series of tannins, almost velvet. There is a stalky juiciness here, to complete a wine that offers the freshest acidity, with only hints of darker fruits.

Initially, it seems somewhat foursquare, with sharp corners, but that is from its youth, and with the black plum fruit flavors, there is plenty of ripeness and balance to come yet.

88-90 Barrel sample. A ripe, fruity, very juicy wine, with delicious blackberry fruits and freshness. Attractive for its drinkability in the near term.

Under the control of the winemaking team of Lafite, this estate is on a roll. This is a beautifully balanced wine, with complexity, richness and cassis, figs and black plums. It is developing relatively quickly, and will be ready to drink in two to three years. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.
