88-90 Barrel sample. A wine that is, initially, all tannin, hard and very concentrated but difficult to get into at this stage. The toughness will probably soften with time, although a hot pepper character denoting higher alcohol will probably last.

91-93 Barrel sample. A wine for the long-term. It has dark tannins, powerful fruit, with some extraction. The density is the power here, firm, solid, very tough at this stage.

Dominated by ripe black berry fruits, spices and pepper, this is just on the right side of overblown. There is a tannic structure, which does suggest that, given another 4–5 years, this will become a better integrated wine.

91-93 Rich fruit currants and berries, intensely juicy, packed with dark very ripe fruit. A powerhouse of berries.

It’s impressive how the new wood, which tasted overpowering in barrel, has now integrated. Yes, it is firm and toasty, but the sweet Merlot shows well, as do the tense fruit tannins. A wine to age.

A young wine, but showing very well; sweet and ripe nose with full aromatics of perfumed fruit, but also coal dust, tar, pepper, earth, quite intense and deep; sweet fruit in the mouth with powerful currents of black fruits and spices competing for space with dry earthen tannins and freshly turned earth; this wine is still very young and the dry tannins and earth tones dominate now, but there is plenty of fruit underneath that will, I suspect, overcome these elements with time and push them back into their respective places.

Sweet and peppery nose, very spicy, rich and ripe fruit that is quite forward and assertive; not as concentrated or as deep as I would have thought given the nose, but is ripe and rich with well-balanced flavors; a nice mix of black fruits and the livelier flavors of cranberries and quince; nice long finish that retains good balance.
