Treated now as a separate wine, rather than a second wine, with its own vineyard, Clos du Marquis has developed a dense, concentrated style. It is firm, chewy, the tannins in suspension in the rich fruit. Good aging potential.

A classic in development, a wine that will last for decades. It is certainly powerful, but already the shape is finalized, with its plums and berries settling down with perfumes, acidity, just enough tannins and a warm, welcoming richness. A great argument for the superiority of 2001 over 2000.

96-98 Barrel sample. A powerful wine, packed with tannins from structured Cabernet fruits. It exudes muscularity, intensity and concentration. The wood element is present. Maybe the final freshness is missing.

92-94 Almost black in color, this huge, ripe wine is driven by immense tannins and dark fruits. Yet it is still unmistakably Bordeaux with its sense of structure and promise of longevity.

94-96 Barrel Sample Exceptionally rich wine, packed with solid Cabernet fruits. Dusty tannins, very sweet blackberries and plum flavors. A dry wine with great elegance.

The new second wine of Château Léoville las Cases is attractively soft and ripe, with berry fruits, spice and tannin. It’s not for aging, but is enjoyable soon for its elegance.

With its superb tannins, the wine has a great solid core of structure. Over it is an edifice of direct black berry fruits, elegant texture and intense acidity. Impressive, a wine for aging.

94-96 Barrel sample. A seriously dense and solid wine, that is however balanced with fruity acidity. The ripe tannins march comfortably with the fruit. This is a wonderfully rich wine, the juicy fruit giving an extra to the structure.

Definite tannins here, a wine that shows ripe fruits, richness and a solid core. It is not huge, but does have structure, bitter chocolate, sweetness. It’s worth aging this wine 3–4 years.

93-95 At first taste, this seems to be an overwhelmingly huge wine. But that is deceptive: it has dense fruit, but it is layered with great blackberry and currant fruits, and very attractive freshness.
