A big, rich chocolaty wine with delicious spice and ripe tannins. The fruit is sumptuously rich, blackberry juice flavors balancing the power and concentration of the texture. In all this richness, there is just enough freshness to lift the finish.

The Pomerol estate of the Rothschilds of Lafite shows the power of Merlot in 2005, the almost indecent richness of the fruit. It’s an opulent, layered wine, spicy, woody and powered though by delicious fruit, ending open and generous.

Sweet and ripe nose, lots of cassis and black fruits, tar, tobacco leaf but at the same time floral and aromatic; loaded with black cherry fruit flavors, this gives way in the mouth to assertive dry tannins that verge on too gripping; there is a battle being fought between the fruit and the tannins, and I suspect the tannins will win in a few years; good now though although quite earthen and dry in the mouth; better with a bit of cheese. (15.5/20)
