Almost black in color. Hugely rich, ripe bouquet with dark fruits. A hint of tobacco, plus structured tannins and acidity give the wine shape. The richness and depth of fruit are here, but so also is the ability to age. Give this 10 years before matruity.

A wonderfully firm wine, which balances extraction with pure sweet fruit. It moves comfortably within its tannic structure, the ripe Merlot allowed plenty of play to show off its black jelly and plum flavors.

87-89 There is plenty of fruit here, black and brooding. But the wine does suffer from excessive dry tannins.

Tasted in early 2006, the barrel sample of this wine was disappointing. But the wine has now shown the sweetness and richness of its fruit, packed with juicy, ripe Merlot, and is held together by sweet tannins. Developing well; drink in another four years.

93-95 The tannins are huge, very dense, packing through the ripe fruit. At first it tastes like a mouthful of wood and fruit tannins, then the potential of the fruit becomes apparent. That gives a wine with a great, final acidity and finish.

weet aromas of mocha, caramel and red fruits, with a backdrop of black pepper and tar, a bit funky at the start; sweet and ripe in the mouth, layered with black fruits spices liberally with elements of cracked black pepper; this is a succulent wine with smooth and silky textures and softened tannins that add to the velvety nature of the wine; fresh focused, there is more red fruit later and the finish shows a nice balanced influence of dry flavors that lighten the finish. Served again at Dick Chang’s Bacchus celebration, with largely consistent notes; my notes from this event reflected more elements of spice and butterscotch in the nose with some elements of salted butter, and in the mouth more specific flavors of quince and crabapples, but I would leave the rating as is.

Rich and ripe nose with black cherry and blackberry aromas most distinguishable, various other black fruits mix with the aromas of tar and black pepper to return to a wonderful penetrating aroma of cassis; sweet and rich in the mouth with layers of black fruits; the wine is more intense than I remember it, and it seems to have picked up weight in the last few years; there are powerful drying tannins in the body of the wine and a troubling hollowness in the center, but it is still a sexy wine with tight and focused elements. (17.5/20) Tasted again later in the year from a different source; consistent notes.
