Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This weighty Malbec is more rough than refined, but what’s here is decent. The nose is round and full of plum and berry aromas, while there’s a full blast of berry fruit along with detectable oak on the palate. The finish is basic and clean, with some buttery oak on the very back.

Smooth and richly aromatic, with pear and apple notes to go with the full allotment of oak and butter. This is Bisquertt’s attempt at a top-shelf Chard, and it isn’t a bad effort. The palate deals plenty of pear and mango flavors, while the finish is warm and oaky. Well made, yet a bit flat. Drink this year for best results. Best Buy.

This is a great house pour for fans of Chilean Merlot with its consistent fruit, soft acidity and low tannins. On the nose and palate, a core of sweet, Red Delicious apple is accented by dry leather, toasty vanilla and dried herbs. Simple, but well crafted.

Dense and chocolaty in the nose, and then even deeper in the body, with plum, black cherry and coffee. This is one of many modern Carmenères that can only help carry the torch for the grape. It’s a good wine worthy of discovery.

This Cabernet has a lean profile and is Bordeaux-like in weight and texture, but there’s lots of dark raspberry and tobacco aromas and flavors. Hints of mint and licorice add a touch of complexity. Finishes with a slight herbal note and even tannins.

Everything is front-end in this Chardonnay. The nose has plenty of tropical fruit, and with some toasted oak in the background. Decent acidity supports the fruit and the smooth mouthfeel is pleasing, but the wine cuts off abruptly with a somewhat short, resinous close.

The biggest and most muscular of Carmel’s single-vineyard Cabs, this wine blends hints of green bean and smoke with ripe cassis and blackberry. Extracted and tannic, and just a little rough on the finish. Try in 2007. Imported by Royal Wine Corporation.

A notable lack of greenness makes this one of the best 1998 Chilean Merlots we’ve tasted. Classic varietal flavors of plum, cocoa and dark berries are supported by good acidity and even tannins. This has structure, depth and a touch of class. Best Buy.

Not unlike this producer's 1999 Chardonnay Selection, this Gran Reserva's delivery is all at the beginning. Apple and toasted oak start things off and are followed by crisp acidity and a smooth mouthfeel, However, the finish is short and the oak somewhat overbearing.

A little lighter in body than many Colchagua Cabs, this one offers clean aromas of plum, cinnamon and clove. Despite the Gran Reserva label, it’s good but basic Cabernet.
