This rarity from Peter Sichel’s cellar, recorked by the maitre d’chai; wonderfully elegant and refined nose, a true aristocrat, sweet fruit with a touch of caramel, perfumed and floral, green olives, spices, faded but not tired; lots of sweet fruit in the mouth beautifully blended with citrus fruit that has a lemony tinge; fresh and smooth with all of the elements having now fully integrated after all this time; long finish, smooth and light but with an air of refinement that no younger wine could provide. Always exciting to approach a wine of this age, this bottle proved wonderful; the first nose was musty and mushroomy after 125 years in the bottle, but then the real nose emerged with a wonderful old vine sweetness and real aristocratic class, aromas of caramel and cacao mixing with spices that seem almost modern in nature; sweet and surprisingly fresh in the mouth with ripe red fruit and lots of nuance; no sign of collapse in this wine in the glass, and the finish was deep and elegant citrus notes at the end. Although often an unheralded vintage, I have found that Lafite is a classic; very sophisticated nose, light and restrained with aromas of violets and lilacs, pure and elegant with dry red cherry fruit, earth, green herbs, the absence of power is replaced by refinement; elegant in the mouth; restrained and cerebral; dry fruit flavors, lots of cherry and currant flavors; long flavors, refined and balanced; dry soft tannins; balanced acidity; sweet mature fruit; quality wine at its absolute peak. Very perfumed and elegant nose, loaded with sweet fruit aromas, restrained acidity with “lead pencil” and cedar aromas, spicy and restrained with aged elegance, like putting your nose into a scented dresser drawer; sweet and elegant on the palate with a sweet fruit and nuances of acidity and sweet fruit; refined wine with real breeding; long and spicy finish with peppery nuances and earth tones at the end. Always a tricky wine in this vintage because of the length of the harvest, this bottle is not one of the better ones; very green and grassy nose dominates the opening, and although there is the presence of black fruits and spices in the nose, it never rises to the surface enough to overcome the greenness that predominates; the wine has good sweet flavors in the front of the mouth, but it lacks the richness and ripeness to carry through; the wine is in the main light and green tasting, with grassy and earthen flavors; a bit thin and light at the finish; I have had much better bottles of this inconsistent wine. (14/20) Another bottle at the 61 First Growth Dinner at March was significantly better and perhaps one of the best I’ve had; perfumed and sweet, cedar and soapstone, floral, lots of pepper, deep and intense aromas literally float out of the glass with confectioner’s sugar mixing with the other aromas; sweet and elegant in the mouth, refined fruit, this is Lafite at its most refined with a complex of flavors but retaining the elegance and aloofness that defines the best of the classic Lafite; long finish here, powerful but balanced acidity, good fruit, cerebral wine. (19/20)

Sweet nose, lots of chocolate, cedar and lead pencil aromas, tar, licorice, spices, smoky, green herbs, cracked black pepper; sweet and rich in the front of the mouth with lots of sweet fruit, ripe and elegant; even though not a great vintage, the wine shows its breeding; a bit too much in the way of dry chalky tannins; not the usual complexity in this wine that often accompanies Lafite, but this is one of the top wines of this difficult vintage. Sweet nose with ripe fruit and the classic Lafite aromas of black fruits mixed with damp earth, green peppers, olives, touch of the “lead pencil” aromas noticeable; sweet and smooth in the mouth; quite a bit of fruit here that shows ripeness and depth in layers of flavor; more concentrated than I remember this wine when it was younger; it seems to have added weight with the passage of time; long finish, smooth and elegant, and very much a Lafite. (18/20) Tasted again at the Commanderie dinner at the Knickerbocker with consistent notes.

What a classic, opens with wonderful aromas of black currants and black plums, the classic “lead pencil” aroma is here as well, mixing with earth and herbs, pepper, lighter style nose which is vintage Lafite; the same on the palate; lighter and quite elegant and an interesting contrast to the more meaty Latour and the more elegant Pichon served at the same dinner; lots of ripe cherry fruit that blends in a mix of blackberries and cranberries; layers of flavor but in this wine there are unresolved tannins that are a bit of hindrance to the enjoyment of the fruit; hopefully this will be addressed with more time; long finish, and bit dry and restrained at the end.
