93-95 Barrel sample. Big and very dense, serious. The ripe plums go with prunes as well as full fruits. On the surface, it seems smooth, but there is concentrated dark tannin underneath.

A hugely rich, concentrated wine for 2004, packed with ripe black plums and berries. This is a great success, with dry tannins balanced by delicious sweet fruit, finishing with a fresh, currant fruit aftertaste.

91-93 Barrel sample. Initially, this wine seems very soft, the ripe fruit just floating. But it is all suppressed at this stage, and suddenly you taste the tannins and the power that is held back.

88-90 A sophisticated wine which has dusty tannins balancing fresh black fruits. With its lightening acidity and its rich, spicy flavors, this is a very polished wine.

This Moueix-owned premier grand cru classé property quietly goes about producing great wines. The 2000 is a complete success, with its aromas of red berry fruits and sweet wood, its flavors cedar and truffles alongside the fine, elegant tannins. It will age slowly and reveal layers of complexity over the years.

Perhaps not the most open and generous of wines, but in a style that has become typical of Magdelaine, this wears its austerity, tannins and dry core proudly. But, because it is 2005, the wine is deliciously perfumed, and the bright cherry flavors are enticing. For aging over 10 years at least.

As often with Magdelaine in recent vintages, this is on the austere side. Its firm tannins and structure dominate the fruit. That said, it does have bright fruit underneath all this tightness, and is finely balanced, the berry fruits lifted with some intense acidity. It needs another few months to settle in bottle.

92-94 Big, rich and smoky, a wine that is packed with jammy Merlot fruit. It is powerful, although with delicious blackberry flavors. Very ripe and dense.

90-92 Barrel sample. As often, Magdelaine is a wine that is on the austere side, emphasizing minerality, not showing much at this stage. The acidity is tight, opening slowly to blackcurrant flavors.

A ripe, big solid wine, almost chunky in character, smooth and velvet in texture, without much in the way of tannins. Its attractive chocolate flavors give it ripeness and make it ready to drink.
