Château Mouton Rothschild’s white wine fits easily into the rich, modern style favored for the château’s reds. There are layers of vanilla and wood, with a ripe, round creaminess. Could age, due to good depth of flavor and some complexity from the acidity.

With its distinctive antique bottle and gold etched label dominated by a sheep, this is definitely a move away from classic Bordeaux bottling. It is good that the wine can support the presentation. The fruit is so ripe, it almost tastes of raisins, but that sweetness is finely balanced by the dry tannins and concentrated texture. To finish, there are exotic spices, giving an almost oriental character to the long aftertaste.

90-92 There is way too much wood with this wine, as much as 90% new wood. It suppresses the fruit and raises a question mark over how the balance in the wine will work out. Of course, it's a great wine, but not up to the standards of the other first growths.

95-97 Barrel sample. Initially, the wine seems austere, very mineral. It opens slowly, showing fruit that is definitely rich, offering velvet tannins. But there is also an iron hand in that velvet glove, because the structure then comes bursting through.

94-96 Barrel sample. With its packed, spicy wood and very ripe fruit, this is almost sweet. There are certainly fruit and tannins there, but now they are dominated by new wood, leaving a coated mouthfeel that hides this wine's true potential.

This wine is dominated by new wood, which goes right through the big, dark fruit flavors and tannins. Very ripe cassis flavors are under this wood, waiting likely for many years before the wood flavors subside. This is very much in the modern, polished style of Mouton today, made even more pronounced by the heat of the 2003 vintage. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

89-91 Barrel sample. Very spicy fruit, with lots of blackcurrant character, very fresh with light tannins. There is a streak of ginger right through the wine, finishing with lively acidity.

92-94 A wine that is powerful, highly extracted and intense. The chocolate flavors and serious, dry tannins go with big, fat blackberry fruits and finishing acidity.

The rare white wine from Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a creamy, full-bodied blend of 48% Semillon, 38% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Muscadelle. Toast and mushroom scents merge easily into buttered stone-fruit flavors on the palate, finishing on a weighty note.

97-99 Barrel sample. A wonderfully structured wine,it combines impressive purity of fruit with delicious, mouth-watering acidity, The dry structure holds this elegant structure perfectly in place. A great success.
