Very slow to open, the wine initially has a flat, metallic nose with little aroma, but then slowly opens to reveal the classic perfumed aromas of this property, laced with black cherry and rose petals; the first taste of this wine is loaded with sweet black cherry extract, but then the wine begins to close down in the mid-mouth, succumbing to big dry tannins, and losing the fruit; the wine seems unbalanced and dry with little fruit evident; it may be past its time, but I do recall having some wonderful bottles of this wine from my cellar recently. Intense nose, loaded with green peppers and green olives, sweet fruit, and earth, lots of black cherry and blackberry aromas, smoke; deep and rich flavors in the front of the mouth; huge fruit but also fresh and focused flavors; layered and complex with a balanced mix of acidity, tannins, and fruit; long finish, with elegance and complexity and an almost endless length that stays in the mouth for minutes; still at the top of its form and one of the wines to beat in this vintage. Sweet and rich nose, lots of cedar and black pepper, smoky and exotic with rich aromas, deep and perfumed; fresh and appealing fruit flavors in the front of the mouth; this wine has always been elegant and refined; lots of tannins and dry textures in the body of the wine, but it has an elegance of style that has held this out among the best of Pauillac in this year; long finish with wonderful cran-apple flavors and gripping textures.
