One of the top producers in the Entre-deux-Mers, Francis Courselle’s white has a freshness, lift and crispness that is not always apparent in 2003 whites. But there are also wood flavors to add complexity, and to produce a beautifully balanced wine.

The more serious of Francis Courselle’s whites is aged in wood. At the moment, the wood is too dominant, but it is still early days for this wine, which certainly needs aging. Richness combines with lemongrass flavors to suggest good fruit under the wood.

This 100% Merlot is named after the patriarch of Château Thieuley, still active, who built the estate into one of the benchmarks of the Entre-deux-Mers region of Bordeaux. Smoky aromas lead to crisply ripe black fruit flavors and some solid, dry tannins. Age this wine for 3–4 years.

Thieuley’s top white, named after the owner, is an intense wine, with honey and acidity in great balance. There are flavors of almonds and vanilla from wood aging. A great white Bordeaux from the Entre-deux-Mers region.

A classic Bordeaux with just that extra edge of ripe fruit. The tannins are dry, but fresh, with acidity that spreads across the black currant fruit flavors. It needs to age for two years, but is already drinkable.

A very polished performance from one of the best wine producers in Bordeaux’s Entre-deux-Mers region. The color is brightly purple. Sweet fruit aromas go through to the modern, smooth flavors, balancing new wood and ripe black fruit. While the wood tannins dominate at the moment, they should soften, and this will become a fine, ageworthy wine.
