If not the best, then one of the best kosher wines we’ve ever tasted, with smoke, cedar and meat aromas nicely balanced by plummy, chocolaty fruit. A creamy mouthfeel and smooth, easy finish makes it a delight to drink, but consume this Merlot-based wine over the near term. Imported by Royal Wine Corporation.

90-92 Barrel sample. One of the likely candidates for promotion to Grand Cru Classé status, this is Jean-Luc Thunevin's original estate. This year there is considerable restraint in what is normally an immensely opulent wine: it is elegant, rather than having a no-holds-barred attitude, that will make this wine a classic.

A slight step down from the nonmevushal bottling, with less plumpness on the midpalate and slightly roasted, but similar, flavors of chocolate, mocha, cedar and bacon. Supple on the finish, this is a blend of 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc. Imported by Royal Wine Corporation.

93-95 Jean-Luc Thunevin's flagship wine is structured certainly, but filled with beautiful perfumed fruit. It is firm while delicious, acidity balancing with a solid core of structure.

93-95 Barrel sample. Now in the mainstream of top Saint-Emilion wines, the former garage wine is packed with rich, juicy fruit. The acidity is a waft over the firm tannins. There is certainly plenty of new wood, but the opulent fruit balances well.

91—93 Barrel sample. The wine made by Jean-Luc Thunevin, the original garage wine. Now a proper estate, with a chateau, it still follows the big, fruity model, but without the extraction of the past. Very fruity, it is also very approachable.
