Wonderful sweet, honeyed nose with lots of ripe fruit, mushrooms, herbs and spices, beeswax, rich and thick nose; a wonderful mix of sweet lemons and limes in the mouth with an elegant dry texture; waxy; good acidity with a mix of smokiness and spices that make the wine quite exotic; solid finish, not as complex as some of these wines can be, but a good presence of layered flavors. Étienne Gonnet – Ripe, rich nose with tinges of honey mixing with green herbs, beeswax, sweet lemons; smooth and silky in the mouth; a bit heavy and thick, but with good balanced acidity; honeyed fruit, herbal, sweet; long smooth finish. (16/20)

Sweet and light nose, quite perfumed, suggests a dried flower sachet in my grandmother’s dresser, grasses and sweet flowers; sweet and smooth in the mouth with hints of sweet chocolate; very pure and clean with a balanced dry texture; elegant, wonderful balance; pure red fruits at the finish but with considerable power and intensity. A vintage of Beaucastel that is overlooked in the shadow of the ’89, this was a good year in the Rhône; sweet and rich, powerful spicy fruit aromas define the nose of this wine, supplemented with herbs, earth, and leather aromas; deep and rich in the mouth, powerful fruit that combines with the other elements in this wine for an intense presentation; there seems to be a strong alcoholic base to the wine which almost interferes with the flavors, but pulls back just in time to leave the richness and sweetness to define the finish; big and expressive at the end. A wine that has been one of the hallmarks of the Rhône since its release, this bottle opens in typical fashion with rich ripe grape extract, mixed with aromas of chocolate, herbs, earth, and a touch of the gamey sauvage nature of the region, very penetrating nose that is beginning to show some signs of wear; sweet and ripe in the mouth with powerful and intense flavors; still showing a lot of big, chewy tannins; the wine is getting a bit hot as the fruit begins to wear down and there is a touch of vinyl in the flavors for the first time in my memory; a hot, spicy, almost biting finish shows that it is time to attack this wine with vigor lest it begin to lose its luster. (18.5/20)

Ripe and rich nose, lots of fresh fruit, raspberry, leather, spice, chocolate, lilac, wonderful depth and texture to the nose; rich and sweet in the mouth, spicy; lots of red fruit, good depth; full in the mouth, alcoholic but not hot; good balance soft tannins; powerful finish with layers of flavor. (17/20)
