Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very rough and salty, with oversized, aggressive Sauv-like aromas and flavors that are well within the realm of varietal correctness but just not very pleasant. There’s a lot of sweat, pungency and salinity to this one.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chakana is not the first winery whose basic Malbec comes across cleaner and more approachable than its reserve, which isn’t to say we don’t like this deeper, more brooding style. It’s just that it doesn’t have the length or depth to match the extract. So in the final analysis it’s fine but soft and bit lacking.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chakana is earning a reputation for value and consistency. Even in a tough category like Argentine rosado this winery has crafted a tasty, rewarding, fairly fresh wine that features sweet, bouncy cherry and raspberry fruit and a full, round finish. Will go great with summer barbecues and picnics.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chakana seems to have the recipe for Best Buy Cabernet Sauvignon. Every year its wine is rich, ripe and solid. This one has leather to accent aromas of black plum and berry pie. The palate offers true cassis and berry flavors, and the finish has vanilla and a slight creamy feel. Well above average for $11.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The nose is like a convention of all the food groups: there’s bold fruit, grilled meat, cola and even some yeasty toast. The palate is juicy and hits with firm, lively blackberry and boysenberry flavors. And the finish offers continuity between the midpalate and end game. A very nice wine from a consistent winery.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chakana has put out many good wines in recent vintages but this rough and tumble blend of Malbec, Bonarda and Syrah comes across minty and forced on the nose and then grating on the palate. Yes, it’s got color and power. But it lacks the balance and body that you’d expect. Frankly, it seems acidified.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Hard and slightly chemical, with heavy fruit that is almost stewed. Very firm tannins and plenty of oak on the finish result in a grabby, chunky wine that registers as forceful, yet short on charm. Imported by Tastings Import Company.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It doesn’t take a genius to realize that this is a very nicely made, fully healthy Shiraz. The bouquet is just right, with smoky nuances to the full-fledged dark fruit aromas. The palate is racy and juicy, but plush with black berry and plum. And the balance is right on. Smells good, tastes good and feels good.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The spice-to-fruit ratio on the bouquet is solid if not out of the ordinary. Tight cherry, plum and raspberry flavors carry the palate, while the finish is largely on the money. A deep and chewy, full-bodied Cabernet. Imported by Tastings Import Company.

Leafy and herbal, with a bit of a cooked quality on the nose. Quite tangy, with citrus, green melon and red currant flavors. Lasting due to outsized acidity.
