Very much in the vein of a super-oaked, ripe Chardonnay, bursting with peach and tropical aromas and flavors, but with a distinctly nutty, minerally, almost steely note and an electric jolt of acidity. Judging from the very long, sweet finish, it’s got quite a life ahead of it.

Gets the job done; a simple, easy wine, showing tons of ripe, candied peach, pineapple and cotton candy flavors. The finish is sugary.

Chalone’s second Syrah is, in a word, excellent—rich and concentrated in cassis and herb flavors, with accents of smoke, vanilla and spice. While it’s dry and pretty tannic, there’s a sweet ripeness that flatters the palate. It’s young and sharp now, but the balance suggests ageability.

An opulent, rich white wine, front loaded with yummy sweet oak, vanilla and butterscotch and backed by hazelnut, apricot, pear, spice and citrus overtones. Full and long on the finish.

Rich, smooth and lush, yet bright and refreshing. The wine is proof that California Chenin Blanc can make a great, dry wine. This oneÕs loaded with gorgeous pear, grapefruit, lemon, mandarine orange, minerals and herb flavors. Long and rich to the end.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Given the historic ageability of Chalone’s Pinots, you might want to give this five years in the cellar. Right now, it’s a bit heavy and soft, although fruity enough, with a great big burst of black raspberry, cherry and vanilla flavor.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fans of upfront fruit will have problems with this earthy, tannic wine. Fresh out of the bottle, the aromas are of cherry tomatoes and herbs, and the wine tastes loamy and herbaceous. But an opened bottle retasted 24 hours later had evolved to yield plenty of sweet, spicy black-cherry fruit, suggesting the possibility of midterm aging.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Kind of on the sweet side, with the flavor of ripe figs and kiwis accented by oak. Even though there’s high acidity, which makes for a steely minerality, this wine still finishes too sugary sweet.

Interesting; it’s dry, refreshingly crisp and aromatic, with citrus and floral flavors. Try as a Sauvignon Blanc alternative.

Ripe and oaky, with juicy pineapple marmalade and butterscotch flavors balanced with crisp acidity, and a dry finish. Easy to like this creamy Chard.
