This is a very tannic wine. It hits the palate with a dusty, sandpapery feeling that makes the gums numb. Then the fruit emerges, currants and cherries, blackberries and plums, and they ride through the finish. It is a classic cellar-worthy Napa Cabernet that will only get better through 2010.

If you like them rich and oaky, this Chard’s for you. Tropical fruit, pear and peach flavors are mingled with smoke, vanilla and buttered toast to forge a strong, flashy wine.

Too sugary sweet, this Cab tastes like the cherry and blackberry filling inside a baked fruit tart. Make it drier and it would be great.

Impresses for the sheer volume of the fruit. Flamboyant tropical pineapple, mango, guava, lots of dusty spices, rich oak, but manages to hold onto balance, dryness and even a sense of finesse all the way through the long finish.

This is an imaginative blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and some other varieties, but it’s a fairly average wine. It’s dry and soft and direct, with cherry, spice and cedar flavors. Drink now.

A good example of a simple Pinot Noir that seems vinified to satisfy increasing public demand for the variety. Basically sound, with a dry, silky texture and decent cherry and cedar flavors.

Soft and simple, with cherry-mocha flavors. Palls after a sip or two.

A very nice, clean-drinking Riesling from high up in the Sierra Foothills. It’s dry in the Alsatian style, with scoury acidity and pure flavors of green citrus blossom, honeysuckle, sage, petrol and stony minerals. A great “other” white wine for sommeliers to put on the wine list.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
After a successful 2001 vintage, the ‘02 is bit raisiny for me, with that hot, pruny note of super-maturity that mars an otherwise fine dry red wine.

The well-known vineyard is located at a high altitude on the eastern side of the valley, above Oakville. The wine shows classic mountain concentration, revealing a massive core of red and black currants, cassis and Asian spices, liberally enriched with sweet, smoky oak. Delicious and complex now, it should develop bottle complexities over the next six years, at least.
