Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Stop and smell the rose and you’ll get what I think a good rose should smell like: a red wine with a slight chill. Deep plum, blackberry and raspberry aromas are edged in flint, with like flavors on the palate and a finish where the flinty dryness is reprised. Deep pink-magenta in color—not shy. A curious blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Cab, and Pinot Meunier.

This is a very good Grenache, with vivid violet and cherry aromas. “Vivid” is an appropriate word for what you get in the mouth, too—the wine’s alcohol is notice-able, and its fruit fairly high toned. Cherry, earth and red plum flavors meld on the palate and fade into an herb-tinged finish.

This is probably the best rosé that comes out of Australia, and I like it better every year. It has an underlying, piquant citrus note, and raspberry and black cherry flavors galore. Medium-full in the mouth, it’s dry, chalky, refreshing. Darkens and deepens on the finish. A crazy blend of Grenache (47.2%), Shiraz (18%), Pinot Meunier (16%), Cab Sauv (15.5%) and Pinot Noir (3.3%) Imported by Bluewater Wine Co.

Spicy, peppery oak aromas are presented on a backdrop of red berry fruit. This wine’s texture is its centerpiece: It has a smooth, mouthcoating, milky-clay feel, and deals berry and subtle oak flavors. Very enjoyable. Imported by Epic Wines.

This is all about immediate drinking pleasure. Offers bright blue-, black- and raspberries on the nose. It’s more of the same on the palate, where there are some cherry and rhubarb notes mixed in. Wooly-textured at first but softens with time, as fathers-in-law tend to do. Imported by Bluewater Wine Co.

This Shiraz features light plum and caramel aromas, and plum and oak flavors. It’s more straightforward than it usually is, but it is still very good. Drink now. 448 cases produced. Imported by Epic Wines.

Melton is a reliably good producer, which is why I’m puzzled by this offering. The palate fruit has meaty, caramelly accents, while the distinctive aroma is watermelon. The sum of its parts just doesn’t yield a better than good wine.

The name “Nine Popes,” as the story goes, came about when Charlie just wanted to muck up the translation of “Châteauneuf-du-Pape.” And appropriately enough, this is a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre, an excellent one, with sexy, stewed plum fruit and bready flavors, almost like fruitcake. Smells earthy, with the same sort of fruit; a dose of brown sugar coats the whole package.

The hints of toast and crème brûlée that accent mixed plum on the palate come through with more force on the finish. Black and red plum fruit on the palate is solid and pure. A really smart package.

Has great grip on the tongue—the chalky tannins hold on for dear life. Medium-bodied; its fruit shows graham cracker, powder and wheat flour through and through. Quite enjoyable.
