A smooth wine, rich for the vintage, with black currant and bright fruits and a strong underlay of wood. The acidity, though, is quite striking, with the freshest fruit and tight tannins.

95-97 Barrel Sample A hugely dense wine, all power and dark tannins. Very concentrated, this is dark, a firm, solid structure covering the huge black plum fruit flavors. It’s all about power.

92-94 Barrel sample. Rich and smooth, with some juicy character, the fruit with black cherries, licorice and sweet jam. At the level of many top wines, this is the second wine Château Ausone.

96-98 Barrel sample. While there is a surprising amount of wood here, the fruit gives a great ripe swathe of blackberry and red plum flavors. The wood spice goes with an impressive weight of fruit, shining through a lovely, perfumed aftertaste.

97-99 Barrel sample. A superb wine that brings together all the qualities of this vintage. It has great fruit, layers of acidity, dark tannins and a velvety texture, without losing the sense of place that sets great Bordeaux apart.

Rich and dense, a second wine that is right at the level of a grand cru classé. The fruit is polished by wood, with additional chocolate and spice character. The wine has power, extraction and tannins that envelop the juicy fruit.

Wonderfully perfumed wine that exudes class. It has weight and extraction, its tannins lending themselves to the ripe texture. The wine is concentrated, dense in texture and for aging.

98-100. Very concentrated and wonderfully perfumed wine. It has great balance and acidity, intense freshness. The superb fragrance of the Cabernet Franc has made a gorgeous wine, black fruited and likely to age for decades.

Forget all those garage wines, forget the upstarts of Saint-Emilion. When you want real class, you have to turn to Ausone. What a wine - magnificently dense and opaque, hugely rich and sensual. Yet it doesn’t seem in the least decadent - for deep inside the wine is a huge backbone of ripe tannins. Keep for at least 10 years

97-99 Barrel sample. It may be 14.5 percent alcohol, but, with its huge freshness, the wine almost sings with elegance. The texture is opulent, with intense black fruits and a core of solid tannins. Impressive balance.
