This is a solid, huge wine, with rich but very dry tannins. With its dense, almost black color, and its sense of brooding power, it promises long aging. It will never be in the opulent Bordeaux camp, despite its prominent new wood flavors, but will probably outlive all but a handful top wines.

A powerfully velvety wine, which still packs a walloping punch of Saint-Estèphe tannins. The fruit, under these tannins, is pure, ripe, black and generous. But there is the proper dryness that shows how the team at Calon-Sègur managed to tame some of the excesses of the 2003 vintage. This will develop, slowly, into a great wine. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

Wonderful sweetness with old vine aromas mixing with dirt and rocks, black pepper, smoke, ripe and obviously mature fruit, with a touch of volatile acidity noticeable; sweet, smooth and ripe in the mouth; this is now a fully mature Bordeaux loaded with ripe fruit that has elemental flavors of cassis and blackberry juice while at the same time introducing earthen and very basic flavors to the mix; soft, dry acidity that is nicely integrated; more citrus at the finish.

This was more like it, with sweet and ripe aromas, deep and enticing, lots of ripe fruit that has overtones of chocolate, cassis, and spices; quite flavorful and with a nice grip; not unexpectedly, a bit coarse and chunky, but with powerful and deep flavors; nice rich peppery finish.Tasted again from a different source later with consistent notes, but with my impressions in the mouth suggesting a more complex and elegant wine with overtones of chocolate and mocha with exotic, refined flavors; warrants a higher rating based on the second set of notes.

This is definitely not the best effort from this property, and points out the failings of the vintage; the nose is ripe and ready, and there is spice and pepper in the aromas, but the net effect has little class, it is rough and coarse with a rough quality to it, reflected in part by what is clearly the aroma of alcohol; the first taste in the mouth was better, perfumed fruit addressed the needs of the palate, but it did not last; the mid-mouth turned earthen and rough, spicy and earthen but without appeal; the wine seems to be hollow in the middle to me; more intensity emerges with additional time in the glass, but this is a burly, rough-hewn wine.

Frankly my expectations were not high for this little known vintage that has escaped comment from the press in the main, and was pleasantly surprised; the nose was very much typical for the property and the commune, showing elements of chocolate, spices, pepper, leather, and earth with a hint of vinyl on the nose; the wine was surprisingly sweet and smooth in the mouth, with ripe fruit and classic black fruit flavors; not complex and not particularly deep, I suspect that the lack of defined acidity and much in the way of tannins dooms this wine to an early demise, but not yet.

Tobacco and sweet fruit on the nose, old vine sweetness, still with evidence of green herbs, floral and perfumed, seductive and ripe; rich and ripe in the mouth, exotic and smooth and silky; this is hedonistic wine with stewed black cherry compote in the mouth; still makes a statement although it is slightly faded at the finish, and there is some loss of vigor in the mouth after a period of time; still a blockbuster and shows this property at its best. Sweet and intense nose, very rich and gives the appearance of a lot of extraction in the aromas, black fruits and black currants dominate the aromas, mixed with earth and some woody scents; sweet, rich and lovely in the mouth, very ripe with big but softened tannins; as always, this wine lacks elegance and is a bit cumbersome, but it is also a wonderful statement of its terroir and the region where it is made; soft and spicy with cranberry and quince flavors at the finish; a jewel of a wine.
