95-97 Barrel sample. A wine that goes instantly for juiciness. The mineral perfumes of Cabernet Franc come through only after penetrating the dense Merlot fruit cake flavors. It is a powerful wine, based upon ripe acidity.

92-94 Great dusty tannins, almost too powerful, very solid in character. The wine is chunky, allowing juicy fruits to show. It is a dry wine, certainly not hard.

95-97 Barrel sample A hugely dark wine, packed with very dry tannins. Initially a little hot from alcohol, later it shows layers of sweet acidity. An example of the power of the vintage without losing grace. An impressive wine.

96-98 Barrel Sample Dark chocolate and mocha flavors, very dark and intense, this is a big, concentrated wine, flavored with bitter cherries and structured. Certainly a great Cheval Blanc.

92-94 There have been more complete Cheval Blancs than this, but this 2003 does have power. Huge fruit, huge solid tannins, concentration - maybe some charm would create a better wine.

96-98. Beautifully perfumed wine, with aromas of violets, the fruit full of ripe spice to put along with the great berry fruits. Tannins at the end are tough, smoky.

95–97 This is certainly one of the stars of the vintage. With its solid tannins and dark, smoky character, it is going to be powerful, but with such elegance. The fruit flavors combine richness and freshness in fine harmony.

In 2000, it seems the Cabernet Franc made Cheval Blanc. It has given a mysterious, wonderful perfume to the intense richness of the Merlot. It has less of the explosive power of Ausone, it is more subtle and elegant, reserving its explosion of richness for the end, when a welter of black fruits seems to go on for ever

Plump, padded and comfortable is the initial impression. But this is also finely structured and dense, with tannins that are sweet, flavors of dark chocolate to go with the roundness and the enticing Cabernet Franc perfumes. In all, this is a great wine, with considerable aging potential, but with enough sweet fruit to make it attractive now.

96-98 Barrel sample. An impressive wine, a true return to form for Cheval Blanc. The fruit is enormous, packed with sweet black berry juice, and with a brilliant freshness. There is a lovely smoky character, topped by ripe figs.
