Expert NoteAugust 11, 2010
Intense wine, the nose opens with powerful aromas, black fruits, tar, chocolate, green herbs, and smoke, quite powerful and deeply aromatic, although there is a hint of volatile acidity in the nose; sweet and exotic on first taste, with powerful and complex black fruit and cassis flavors; this changes rapidly as the powerful tannins for which this vintage is known emerge and change the fruit over to crabapple and red currant flavors; intense and impressively structured with layers of flavor; no soft nuanced elements here though, with assertive and powerful tannins at the end keeping focus; still harmonious, but I can see that in the next few years the tannins will begin to suppress the fruit, moving this wine to a more dry and earthen set of flavors.

A vintage about which very little is said, and with some good reason; at this stage the wines of this weak year are suspect, but rare; this bottle was interesting with an opening nose that was light and somewhat dissipated, but did have interesting aromas of perfumed leather, earth, sour mash, but also a bit musty and unclean; the wine is interesting, it is weak, but there is a sweetness of fruit that is evident yet, and while the wine dries out quickly in the mouth to a more dusty and earthen set of flavors, it has its elements, and I suspect that some years earlier could have been a good dinner wine. (14 for effort)

Deep and complex nose with wonderful aromas, starting with deeply scented sweet and ripe fruit, but then moving on to reveal chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, pepper, Russian leather; rich and ripe in the mouth with powerful intensity and subtle nuances at the same time; peppery and spicy, but also silky and sweet; a beautiful mix of red fruits and softer black fruits; pure and laser-sharp at the end.

I have felt for some time that this wine is evolving at a glacial pace, and this bottle reaffirmed that for me; the nose is classic, spicy aromas of chocolate and mint, eucalyptus, herbs, very aromatic and floral; in the mouth the wine does start out with sweet and succulent mocha-flavored fruit, but the wine is still tightly wound; it reveals enough to affirm its greatness, but is holding back flavors that are deeper and more complex; one does pick up earth tones and ripe tannins, peppery fruit, and small bits of chocolate sweetness, but the finish is compressed and is only slightly softened; a great wine in the making though

Always a contender with the First Growths, this bottle was no exception; very sweet and ripe nose, characterized by overripe fruit as is often the case with this property, strong presence of peppermint, confectioners’ sugar, green peppers, chocolate, licorice, deep and complex; sweet and ripe in the mouth with very intense flavors; deep and complex; flavors of tobacco, caramel, powerful and intense tannins; surprisingly dry at the finish as the tannins exert a lot of presence; flavors of quince, but also raspberry and cherry flavors; a complex wine and quite worthy of a run with the First Growths. (19/20)

Opens with a classic softness and seductiveness of this property, a sweet and perfumed nose with soft, enticing aromas, leather, earth, pepper, black fruits, hints of tar; sweet and mature fruit in the front of the mouth, the flavors are a bit faded and thin now, bordering on dilute; but still shows the ripe fruit that defines these wines at their best; an echo of what it was a few years ago; still a pleasant wine though. (15.5/20)
