A powerhouse of rich Merlot, big, ripe, with black plums, sweet figs and only light acidity. A wine for lovers of big Merlots, this rolls generously around the mouth. Because of this immediate richness, it seems likely to age quickly.

92-94 Barrel sample. Firm, but ripe, very sweet Merlot coming through a core of tense acidity. This is chunky, foursquare, remaining fruity while also tannic.

Dark-colored wine, with smoky, bitter chocolate flavors: cocoa plus spice and jammy black plums. It’s powerful, densely textured, finishing with good acidity.

92-94 New wood mint aromas give this wine its great polished feel. The tannins offer a counterpoint of richness here, firm and dense. The fruit takes a while to show through, then brings the fine plum skin flavors suffusing through the wine.

This is a big, opulent wine, and although still not even close to ready to drink, the depth and power of the wine is apparent; the nose is deep and brooding with tar and black fruits, earthen, intense, ripe, touches of iodine and herbs; big and powerful in the front of the mouth, the wine assumes better balance with a bit more time in the glass; dry tannins not yet resolved characterize the mid-mouth; then more rich sweetness; black cherry extract, good citrus notes for balance; this is a classic in the making.
