Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Although Sauternes did not produce great wines in this vintage, it’s only appropriate to include d’Yquem with the others at the dinner; more of a sweet, later harvest wine than a classic Sauternes, the d’Yquem has a very sweet, almost sugared nose, burnt sugar, vanilla; sweet and ripe in the mouth, almost viscous; flavors of burnt sugar, vanilla, bitter almonds, lemon peel, almond oil; not a leader among d’Yquems, but certainly a well-made wine, although the absence of meaningful botrytis hurts the flavor. Sweet and ripe nose, very much in the nature of this wine, caramel and vanilla, touch of aromatic herbs, rich aromas; flavors of baked apples and spicy fruit, caramel and figs; crème caramel; smooth and silky textures; not as complex as some of the best years of this wine, but quite good. (18/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
A difficult vintage for Sauternes, reflected in this wine; harsh, somewhat overripe nose, it has caramel and hints of vanilla, but at the same time has a slightly musty, sour aroma; sweet and laced with caramel in the mouth, but missing the freshness of fruit; honeyed, sweet, but a bit clumsy. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet, rich nose with lots of apricot and butterscotch aromas, sugared scents with strong aromatics; sweet and smooth, ripe in the mouth, with vanilla and apricot flavors; lacks a central focus though; seems low in acidity, which leaves the wine somewhat flabby and vague, long sweet finish, but could use a bit more grip. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Classic nose, powerful and intense, sweet and spicy with pine and pineapple aromas, touch of vanilla; sweet and rich, intense, still very young so not showing much of its full range of flavor; mostly vanilla and sweet apricot and pineapple flavors; good acidity, well balanced; evolving nicely but needs more time. (18/20) The same wine served from regular bottles at the Caine Bacchus weekend was consistent, showing a bit more maturity, and a stronger presence of raisins and oranges, but otherwise reflective of the magnum; emerging as a very good year for d’Yquem.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Wonderful nose of honeyed tea leaves, touch of apricot and pineapple; sweet and honeyed in the mouth, but with a real shot of acidity and lemony flavors that produce a focused and fresh wine; long finish, spicy, sweet and unctuous, but at the same time focused and layered, complex and deep at the end; this is a wine that is evolving very well. Sweet and aromatic, lots of spice and sugar, apricots and creamy peach aromas; sweet in the mouth, lots of sweet white fruit flavors, hints of butterscotch and vanilla; seems somewhat simple though and does not appear to have a lot of botrytis; it is always difficult to drink these wines young; they need to age to show their full potential; this one seems simple now, but maybe more time will add complexity and depth. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Powerful nose, lots of sweet fruit, perfumed scents of white flowers and apricots, sweet peach aromas, spicy intense; sweet and concentrated in the mouth with a nice balance and sweetness, there is plenty of acidity here to keep the wine focused; good presence of botrytis; at this early stage there is more sweetness than complexity, but the wine has lots of depth that will, I believe, develop well in the next several years; this is one to leave alone for a while. Sweet and very aromatic but surprisingly complex already with aromas of green herbs, sugared aromas with sweet spices, exotic sugared fruits, perfumed; sweet and intense in the mouth with perfume-laden flavors; quite spicy; good acidity evident in this wine; quite impressive already with layers of flavor starting to emerge; long sweet flavors at the end with a treacle-based finish.
