92-94 Very densely tannic wine, the dry character of the wine a major element. This dryness gives the wine power, without the fruit at this stage. It does have the weight for the future.

This has been a perennial over-performer, and this bottle was no exception; opens with a magnificent nose so reminiscent of the great ‘61s; deep and rich with intense black fruit and tar aromas, grows in the glass taking on aromas of liquid blackberries and blueberries; incredible in the mouth, ripe, rich and smooth with layers of fruit and beautifully integrated tannins; smooth acidity; very sweet in the mid-mouth, but clean and classy with no hint of age other than the smooth textures; virtually perfect. (19.5/20)

Very sweet nose at the start with layers of chocolate and cacao aromas, edged with black fruits and a touch of cassis, also quite bit of herbs and pepper in the background, more complex than one would have thought; sweet fruit on the entry, but not a lot of depth here; light and a citric; lacking real body, and I don’t think there is more there underneath; lots of black pepper at the finish, but this is a wine to drink now, as it will not improve much with age.
