Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Initially dominated by tannins, this wine is now evolving to show a softer, easier side. With sweet fruit and a delicious, refreshing juicy black currant acidity, the tannins are now the base of an approachable wine, offering considerable pleasure.

What a perfumed, elegant, structured wine, with all the elements of fruit, wood, tannins just in the right place. It shows great tannins, powerful black and red berry fruits, denseness, and a classic, fresh aftertaste.

A very typical wine for the year, with its generous ripe fruit and blackberry jelly flavors. There is just a hint of animal on the palate, but this is overwhelmed by the rich texture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A solid, firm wine; young and closed up. It has an awkward sharpness to its fruit, maybe a stage in its evolution. It seems to be more focused with its dry tannins, layering these right over the fruit.

87-89 This is a very firm, direct wine, balancing wood with dry fruit tannins. It lacks fruit at this stage, but there is enough power to suggest the fruit will come through later.

94-96 Barrel sample. Acidity, blackcurrant fruits, dry tannins: all the hallmarks of young Cabernet Sauvignon in a ripe, layered complex wine that will develop into something extraordinary. A great wine .

90-92 Barrel sample. Good density here, structured, with some jammy sweet fruits as well as a dark layer of dense tannins. The potential is well for a well balanced wine.

89-91 While the tannins are dense, this wine has excellent powerful fruit and great, solid black flavors. It has the fresh acidity of the year.

93-95 Barrel sample. Vanilla new wood aromas, followed by sweet wood and sweet fruit. There is certainly enough weight here, with ripe, smooth texture and fresh blackcurrants.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This tastes of great Cabernet Sauvignon, with its black currant, cedar and herbs and fresh, juicy acidity. It is as fresh as it is rich, but it has a structure of dense tannins that balances the wine. This is one of the best wines from Gruaud-Larose for several years.

With a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a structured wine, the freshness coming from intense blackberries. Spice and bitter coffee flavors mingle with the tannins, promising some good aging for the vintage.

94-96 A solid, chunky wine. It has powerful dry tannins, although they are never dominant, leaving the sweet fruit to shine. Blackberry flavors and the dark core are becoming well integrated.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Under the management of Jean Merlaut, this estate has lost some of the super-opulence of the wines of the 90s, and gained finesse and elegance. That has stood the 2003 in good stead, emphasizing solidity and dry tannins to balance the wood and cranberry flavors of the fruit. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

Heavy - too earthy. Gritty tannins - rose didn't like.

A very nice, very typical Bordeaux. There is a bouquet of plum, black cherry and slight oak with additional flavors on the palate of cedar, mint and vanilla. After breathing for an hour or so in a glass, some earthy undertones begin to come through - including a tanned leather flavor. Left some for the next day and the nose really opened up. Clearly some notes of Brett on this one.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
A wonderful ripe and rich nose; layers of deep black fruit aromas that start from the bottom of the glass and emerge with a great deal of exuberance to attach to the nose, earthen, peppery, smoky, some age showing now in the funky secondary aromas that need to dissipate once the wine is opened; rich and ripe in the mouth, almost thick; lots of black cherry flavors layered with cassis, blackberry liqueur, and earth; as with all the wine of this vintage, no lack of acidity here; long and powerful at the finish; as is typical of this wine, always more coarse than elegant, but at this age (the wine’s, not mine) most welcome. (18.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet fruit on the nose, ripe and rich with lots of tar and earth tones, smoke and pepper; sweet and ripe, but not balanced as well as the ’88 above; there is an overabundance of dry, woody tannins in the mid-mouth that reduces the appeal of the wine; finishes better with more fruit and citrus flavors to freshen the palate, but this is not a compelling wine and is a bit flat, even though it is intense and shows layers of fruit. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This wine has always been one of my favorites from this vintage; opens with a deep and rich nose, loads of sweet fruit layered over earth, with nuances of caramel, pepper, and smoke; sweet and fresh in the mouth with lots of spicy fruit; black pepper, plenty of tannins at the core of this wine; big, earthy sweet finish; not a particularly complex wine, but well made and quite expressive of the style and terroir of the region. (18/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Deep nose with wonderful Médocian aromas, black pepper and tar mixing with earth and rich black fruit, black berries, cassis, complex nose with lots of layers; very full and balanced in the mouth but with a nice presence of red cherries and citrus fruit that keeps the wine fresh and focused; this wine is still young and has miles to go; complex and sophisticated showing the new quality of this property; evolved nicely to this point with poise and character, and will likely still get better in the next few years. (18/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
So classic, so earthy on first pouring that it seems to define the earth that it grew in, then elements of ripe fruit and cassis, perfumed herbs and floral scents that conjure up carnations and sweet clover; sweet and ripe, smooth and rich in the mouth; but also has an element of fresh citrus and green apple that freshens the wine; big wine with muscular flavors that seem more Pauillac than St. Julien. (18.5/20) Tasted again later in the year from a different source; pretty consistent notes.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This is the “new” Bordeaux, fleshier, friendlier and more appealing early; rich ripe nose of black fruits, cassis, tar, earthen tones, but sweet and very ripe; same in the mouth; gone is the big tannic core of earth and herbs; what has replaced is a deep and rich compote of fruit and tar, cassis, licorice; very rich and ripe, almost opulent; sweet fruit; long finish with fruit and sweet spices, touch of smoke; this is quite appealing, but this is a “now” wine. (17/20)
