Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Beautifully dense, this generous, rich wine combines great fruit with a firm but sweet structure. The new wood element is still prominent, but this is now beginning to blend well with the ripe fruit. To finish, the tannins reassert themselves.

92-94 Barrel Sample A big, spicy wood-flavored wine, very modern and smooth with its vanilla character. But there’s also some dominant tannin that brings strength and power.

A solid wine, well structured, with soft but supple tannins that frame a core of blackberry, cassis, toast, coffee, anise and herb notes. The finish has a hint of sage and thyme, ending with moderate length. Good Bordeaux from a good year. Kosher

The completeness of 2001, with its miraculous balance, is present in this wine. The acidity, ripe blackcurrants sit comfortably on top of dry tannins, the fleshiness of the fruit taking the edge off the tannins. It seems to bring out the structure, the fruit and the refreshing acidity of great Cabernet.

A powerfully extracted wine, which almost—but not quite—submerges what is a fresh, fruity layer. The new wood that goes with the extraction is obvious at this stage in the wine’s development, but that cassis fruit will bring out the freshness later.

91-93 This is certainly a big, tannic wine, but there are also huge dark-plum flavors, spices and a fine long-term structure.

92-94 Barrel sample. A beautiful, fruity wine with great black flavors, rich acidity, the tannins playing the essential bass counterpoint. The dryness from the structure only comes through right at the end.

92-94 Dense, almost dusty tannins, but big fruit that gives potential balance to a fresh wine. Also has blackberry flavors.

A huge, opulent wine that packs sweet, rich tannins and spicy fruit. In the midst of all this decadence, though, is a kernel of tannic dryness. This estate, long the weakest of the three Lèoville wines, is now back in top form. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

95-97 Firmly tannic, although with wonderful fresh fruit, black currant skins, damsons, followed by bitter chocolate. It is certainly tough and dense, with the juicy acidity of the year giving a lifted finish.
