Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A fat wine, reflecting the hot 2003 vintage. Highlights on the palate are toast and some grassy character from the Sauvignon Blanc. Finishes big and rich.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The ancient vineyard of Tour Carnet, first planted in the 15th century, is into a renaissance. This wine, which showed too many tannins when in barrel, is now coming to life. The balance, the acidity and the seductive perfumes promise plenty. So does the structure, just hinting at bitterness, a function of its youthfulness. Keep for 5–8 years.

A spicy, nutty wine, with fresh white fruits and some richness. A high proportion of the rare Sauvignon Gris gives this wine an attractive aromatic quince element, supported by judicious new wood.

92-94 Barrel sample. Mint and herbs set the scene for a ripe, black-fruited, relatively soft wine, where the tannins are charming rather than firm. But it's easy to imagine this wine broadening and developing a more structured character later.

86-88 Big dark fruit, with tannins and ripe flavors. It’s dark, woody and pretty tannic. But there is good acidity.

90-92 Barrel sample. Firmly dry wine, solid with many firm, wood-derived tannins. It gives bitter coffee and cranberry juice flavors, but also manages to retain freshness.

90-92 Packed with new wood, very polished wine, its tannins smooth and velvet. It has a delicious juicy red berry fruit character that shows a fine elegance.

85-87 Barrel sample. A curiously perfumed wine, like a bar of French soap, the fruit showing some freshness but edging towards bitter.

Spicy blackberry, black cherry, cocoa and a floral note on the nose. Supple and chunky; not particularly delineated or complex but chewy, ripe and chocolatey. Finishes with slightly dry tannins but appears to have enough supporting mid-palate material. A good effort. Graves
