Lagrange, now well at the top among the estates of Saint-Julien, started making a white wine in 1997 again after a break of 25 years. This 2002, from an 8-acre parcel, spent 11 months in wood, and is therefore layered in vanilla flavors. But it is the rich fruit and the balancing acidity that has the last word.

Very elegant, very classy, this wine shows, discreetly, its sweet juicy fruit, great ripe black currant flavor and fine tannins. Nothing is overstated; this is for lovers of stylish wines.

A dark, dry, brooding wine, which has flavors of blackberries and red plum skins, which is not at all dominated by wood. This is a classic wine, with Saint-Julien’s elegance and 2003’s power. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

A wine that balances its freshness with deep layers of black fruits. Acidity and black currants work well together. Lagrange is over-performing at the moment: an estate that once made correct wines now offers excitement as well.

90-92 A wine with great ripe fruit, delicious acidity and freshness. It is firm, but the almost jammy sweetness makes it very appealing.

94-96 Barrel sample. Big tannins here, but balanced and equaled by very ripe, immensely black fruit. Acidity playsa good counterpoint to the sweetness of the fruit.

90-92 Barrel sample. With its severe edge, this is obviously a wine likely to age well. The fruit is firm, concentrated, maybe a little extracted, but it is supported by fresh acidity.

92-94 Dark, dry wine initially with austerity. Then the bright berry fruits come from behind the severe façade to give a structured, still luscious wine.

From a parcel of vines in the Saint-Julien property of Château Lagrange, this wine is a fine, classically balanced white Bordeaux, with its herbaceous character tamed by a light touch of wood, and the edge of earthiness that seems characteristic of whites from the Médoc. The wine ends with vivid acidity and green fruits.
