There is a high level of wood here, but that is sustained by the weight of the black fruits and the rich tannins. The wood gives a vanilla character that will disappear in a year or two, leaving a solid wine that is dominated by ripe, sweet Merlot.

91-93 Barrel sample. There's beautiful fruit here: vibrant black plums and a touch of cinnamon. This has real Margaux elegance and character, with a fresh style, just supported by open tannins. Lascombes seems to be coming into its own at last.

This is already developing fast, its balance right in place. While that does not suggest much aging potential, the dry tannins, sweet fruit and smoky wood give it richness and concentration. To drink in five years.

Sometimes a young Bordeaux can taste as if the winemaker has gone over the top with wood. That’s the case with Lascombes 2004. It seems that there aren’t enough other elements in the wine to sustain such lavish wood flavors.

Finally it looks as if Lascombes is back on form. With its huge vineyard, a good selection of the best fruit has been the issue, and this has happened with 2003. It’s not a huge wine, but there is smooth, polished fruit, layered with wood and dusty tannins. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

92-94 Barrel sample. A rich, concentrated wine, the black fruits fitting well into the solid, dark tannic structure and juicy aftertaste. An impressive performance, and a wine that will age well.

A fresh, fruity wine, with cigar and wood aromas, spice and light black fruits. This wine comes from before the renaissance that is taking place at Lascombes, and shows the lightness of the wines produced under the old ownership. It is balanced and fresh, with a good, dry aftertaste.

Lascombes is approaching the form its status as a second growth suggests. This wine is close, packed with dark fruits, figs and juicy black currant extract. The aftertaste has some bitterness, with layers of toast and spice coming through strongly.

Packed with tannins and new wood, this wine has a dark character. At this stage, it is more tannin than fruit, with heavy extraction. Only at the end does some jammy fruit show through. Judging by its final weight, though, it will mature well.

90-92 Rich wine, its smooth structure going with the ripe berry fruits. It lacks some definition, but all the components are there to be integrated.
