Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is such an expressive wine, with elegance a major factor in its character. It is certainly huge, rich and dense. But there is much more to it. You can peel layers of fruit and tannins away, and still never get to the end of the wine’s complexity. At every stage of its life, it will reveal a new character, but for now it is dominated by powerful tannins and huge, black, fruit.

96-98 What makes a great Latour is a sense of completeness, of restrained power and of levels of complexity which the other first growths rarely achieve. That's why Latour 2003 is a great wine.

There are tannins, structure and power, but also supreme elegance. The 2004 acidity comes through in the sweet cassis flavors, supported at the back by dry tannins. Currently, the wine is closed up, losing some of its fresh fruit, but this is a moment in its slow evolution towards a classic Latour.

Latour’s second wine is, as so often, on a level with many classed growths. In 2004, it is also a very faithful reflection of the vintage: fresh, lively and vital, with acidity and vibrant blackberry fruits very much up front. If not big, it is deliciously fresh and will develop well over five years.

91-93 Barrel sample. Effectively a grand cru in its own right, Latour's second wine is superb, ripe with hugely strong tannins, and great, ripe acidity.

98-100 Barrel Sample. This has to be the wine of the vintage. It sums up all the positives of a great year: glorious fruit, power, elegance and acidity to balance. The tannins are enormous but they are still brooding rather than extracted. 87% of Cabernet Sauvignon.

94-96 Barrel sample. Elegance and fruit are the hallmarks at Latour in 2008. The tannins are present, but subdued. The balance is what is impressive, with tight ripe fruits, nothing over-stated.

Rich and fresh, with firm dark tannins, acidity and true black currant flavor. There is a chewy, chalky texture underlying beautiful fruit.

Big and bold for the year, the tannins quite solid with a tight character. The fruit flavors are rich and intense, spiced with toast and acidity. Through it all goes the tell-tale 2007 streak of acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A big and powerful wine, with tannins that are compact and dense. The dryness of the tannins go right to the core, surrounded by chocolate, sweet fruit and dark berry flavors. The wine is well structured, big and bold, with plenty of firmness promising aging.
