92-94 As always, this property turns in an excellent performance. Perhaps it lacks the true excitement of some years, but with its solid, chunky fruit, its restrained wood and its dark fruit flavors, it will certainly be a wine to keep.

Right at the top of its form, this 2006 is one of the finest wines to come out of the vintage. The wine is structured and dense, but with such heartwarming ripe fruit that the tannins are almost submerged. There is just a hint of wood, but juicy black currant continues right through to the end. In a year, the fruit will lessen, and long aging begin.

Right from the early days of tasting in spring 2001, this was going to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent, less classical than Léoville-Barton can sometimes be.

As so often, Léoville-Barton stands out for its style and elegance. With fresh fruit and acidity allied to generous tannins, it sums up the character of the 2004 vintage. Very classic in Bordeaux terms: not hugely powerful, but delicious.

94-96 Barrel sample. New wood aromas, follow with solid, dark fruits. This is a powerful wine, which shows elegance and structure together and in balance. A wine for long-term aging. The wood element needs to be watched, though.

95-97 Barrel sample. A solid, very firm wine that initially lacks charm. But it just needs time to knit together; as it is now, its huge, dry tannins completely hide the fruit, just giving hints of greatness to come .

93-95 There are huge new wood aromas, and these follow through to the flavors. But there are also black currants and fresh acidity.

97-99 A big, solid, wood powered wine. The power is all there, new wood offering an immense structure, while the acidity gives the necessary freshness. A solid wine, very concentrated, with an immensely long future.

Somehow Barton has overcome the heat of the 2003 vintage and has come out with a new wine that is rich and elegant. There are generous tannins, ripe black currant fruits, balancing acidity, all in an ensemble that is so much more than the sum of its parts. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.
