Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There is a rich feel to this wine, its soft, velvet texture accompanied by juicy acidity. It has elegance, not huge tannins, and offers a fresh finish.

92-94 Barrel sample. The wine feels very soft, with sweet spice and light tannins. It is packed with blackberry fruits, although there is a sold, firm structure under the ripe fruit.

Powerful yet still retaining a sense of restrained style, this wine is packed with ripe plum and sweet berry fruit flavors, laced with firm, dusty tannins. Acidity filters through the dense texture to give great freshness.

95-97 Such a powerful wine, although with rounded flavors, very ripe in character. The wine has chocolate and dark coffee flavors to go with the juicy fruit. The acidity gives just the right balance.

92-94 Barrel sample. Dense, but well balanced, a fine expression of the richness and the tannins of Sain-Estèphe. Those tannins are tight, dry, but add blackberry jam richness.

90-92 Great structure, great acidity, with the ripe fruit pierced with acidity. The tannins are hugely powerful and dry.

Thought by many tasters to be the wine of the vintage at the time of the 2004 barrel tastings. Has it retained that status? It is certainly a hugely powerful wine, monumental even. It is also finely balanced, with great dark tannins working in partnership with brooding black fruit. The question is whether it is too big, too powerful: only time will tell. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

95-97 Barrel sample. A wine that feels big but not heavy. With a solid structure, the wine shows black density at the same time as the blackcurrant juice of Cabernet shines through.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The second wine of Château Montrose is at a high level. With its ripe chocolate and sweet black currant flavors, the structure comes from dark tannins, which, as so often in Saint-Estèphe, are dry, but not hard, and have delicious fresh berry fruits to envelope them. A wine that is great for aging over 4–5 years.

Château Montrose Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Yes, this wine is tannic. To begin with it seems austere and mineral. But then the substrate of black berry juice asserts itself. The fruits are fresh rather than sweet, combining with leather, spice and a presence of new wood. Typical of Montrose, it is hard to appreciate this young, with those tannins needing to open out. But wait 10 years.
