This happens to be one of my favorite vintages of Mouton, and this is a perfect bottle; very sweet and hedonistic nose, loads of chocolate and mocha, kirsch, cassis, sweet spices; absolutely stunning in the mouth with great focus and balance; this is a true First Growth; sweet fresh fruit that is a complex mix of berries, plums, and quince; pure and fresh with hints of chocolate and lots of cracked black pepper; slightly roasted but very expressive; this is a wonderful wine. (19.5/20)

Served with the ’61 above, I was worried when this was first poured as the nose was surprisingly green and herbaceous, with cedar, smoke, and tobacco aromas, but then as it sat in the glass the ripe fruit emerged and the wine assumed the floral kirsch-laden nature that sets it apart from many other wines of this vintage, also deep and complex aromas, lots of black fruits; spicy and flavorful in the mouth with intense concentration; black cherries mix with chocolate and caramel and a core of powerful tannins that keep the wine focused; long finish, a classic and now perhaps the best of the ‘59s. (20/20)

In combination with the ’59, I have found that the passage of time has made this the pairing to beat; no exception in this bottle from Gene Glazer’s cellar; classic Mouton nose of cedar and earth, tobacco, minerals, lots of kirsch and cassis, intense and deep; rich and ripe in the mouth with layers of sweet cherry fruit; chocolate and sweet caramel flavors; perfectly balanced acidity with harmonious tannins; long finish and still at the top of its form. (20/20) Another bottle served at the 61 First Growth Dinner at March was consistent with the same great flavors and complex layers of fruit, and the endless finish; certainly deserving of the same top rating. Wonderful aromatics, very perfumed and cassis and cherry liqueur, wood, hints of cedar and sour mash; a bit disappointing in the mouth, somewhat light and with a sense of dryness in the background; not exactly drying out, but not with the level of concentration that one looks for in this property; has nice flavors, black fruits laced with earth; good but not great finish, a bit short and abrupt at the end. (16.5/20) Another bottle at the Bernard Hervet Alain Ducasse dinner was richer with more sweet fruit, but generally fell within the same parameters as the initial notes. Tasted several more times with relatively consistent results; the wine is quite good, but shows signs of age, particularly on the finish. Drink soon.

Not a strong vintage, but Mouton produced a very acceptable wine; lots of mocha on the nose, sweet ripe fruit, smoke, blackberries, tobacco leaf, sweet and ripe aromas; sweet and smooth in the mouth; a truly pleasant wine, but without the power and the depth of the better years; nice flavors of ripe fruit, tobacco, tea leaves, slowly giving way to dry earthen tannins; good finish but begins to thin out in the mouth at the end. (15/20)

Intensive nose, deep and powerful, aromas of butter, cassis, kirsch, cracked black pepper; as has been the case for several years now, this wine is massive in the mouth; there is an intense concentration of fruit that is compacted but refined at the same time; I still feel that this wine needs more time as it seems still very tightly packed into itself; the flavors, though, are explosive with cassis and intense black fruits; more refined now than even one year ago, showing more nuanced red and black cherry flavors; big finish, smooth and polished, refined. This wine is now fully mature, and probably in need of drinking soon; a good bottle of this wine, though, is a treat, and this one was one of those; the nose of this wine has always been sweet and rich, and it is even more so now with some additional age, lots of chocolate and caramel, cassis, kirsch, but with the presence of shale and pepper also evident; the flavors are still sweet and ripe, quite powerful, but it is beginning to lose some of the concentration in the mid-mouth; becoming more earthen and dry the longer that it sits in the glass; good finish; a solid performer if not a top wine from this property. This remains the wine to beat in this year and this bottle is right on the money; fabulous nose of cedar and tobacco, quince, kirsch, cassis, green herbs, very deep and complex; rich and full in the mouth, wonderful sweet flavors of black cherries, kirsch, cassis, blackberry extract; perfectly balanced acidity that adds lemon zest to the mix of fruit; layered flavors; smooth and silky textures; still plenty of fresh tannins that keep the wine within well defined borders; long sweet finish that is characterized by rich black fruits prodded by balanced full tannins; coats the mouth and stays in the mouth for a full minute after the thrill is gone.
