Rich and concentrated, touched easily by toasty wood. The tannins are so sweet, blending easily into the powerful texture of black berry fruits with, hints of licorice. This is a ripe wine, its acidity always present.

At this stage, this is very closed, very tight, giving little. But it is possible to discern that this is going to be a beautiful wine. There are flavors of sweet raisins and the fruit has a new world richness, but the structure of dry tannins is always present. It looks as though it has a good, long life.

91—93 Barrel sample. For Palmer, this is an atypical wine. With a much higher percentage than usual of Cabernet Sauvignon, it loses the plump character normally associated with this estate. Instead, there is a wine with noticeable currant fruit flavors, very fresh, layered with wine and with prominent acidity to finish. It is much more about elegance than richness.

This velvet-textured wine, smooth and soft, has power and density, but all the edges have already smoothed away, leaving sweet hedgerow berries, dark chocolate and mint.

92–94 An opulent Palmer, which exhibits the richness of the Merlot. It has velvety tannins and sweetness. The wood is there, but does not dominate.

94-96 Barrel sample. A fine, dry, complete wine, with all the elements in place. It is dense, with black chocolate opulence, but underlying is very pure acidity and dark plum fruit flavors.

98-100 Barrel sample. Sumptuous, opulent, with gorgeous ripe fruit, and yet under 14 percent alcohol. The firm tannins are almost smothered by the delicious fruits. It is a great wine that expresses both the natural exuberance of Palmer and the rich fruit and balancing freshness of the vintage.

91-93 Barrel sample. Very ripe fruit aromas. The palate is almost velvet in texture, smooth and rich, fruits packed with black berries and sweet plums. A charming, delicious wine.

96-98 A beautiful wine, with its tannins powered from within the ripest black currant. There is spice, flavors of blueberries, chocolate, and powerfully concentrated tannins. Despite all this power, the elegance of great Margaux is all there.

Aromas of black tar, chocolate and berries lead to a wine that is so effortlessly delicious that it’s easy to forget the power the Merlot gives it. The center is round, but dark, filled with sweetness; the outer layers are full of red jelly and toast. There are tannins, but they, too, are sweet.
