Château Preuillac, deep in the wilds of the northern Médoc, is making very good wine, to judge by this and other recent vintages, thanks to big investments from the Mau family. It is finely balanced, a combination of a dry, firm, tannic structure and ripe, juicy fruit, underpinned by new wood.

The Mau family, who also run négociants Yvon Mau, have poured money into this Médoc chateau, bringing it back to life. It has paid off in this powerful, rich 2003, which packs blackberry flavors alongside new wood, polished tannins and impressive aging potential. Imported by Victoire Imports.

Very much in the food style of Bordeaux, this wine shows the freshness of the 2006 vintage, while also offering some ripe weight. Flavors of fresh black currants edged with black plum skin are supported by a firm line of tannins, finished with a sweet, juicy, fleshy aftertaste.

Classic, balanced wine with a twist of richness. The black currant flavors are almost jelly-like in their sweetness, although these flavors are well balanced with acidity and a firm layer of dry tannins.

89-91 Ripe, juicy fruit laced with wood and tannins. The fruit is so black currant jam in flavors that the wine is almost approachable now.
