Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
The initial nose on this bottle was quite musty, and while that cleared up, the nose seems quite advanced for the age of the wine, sweet and spicy, ripe fruit bordering on overripe, honey and sugar aromas, green herbs; sweet and ripe in the mouth, somewhat earthen and spicy with a healthy dose of pepper; good lemony acidity at the end; the wine finished better than it started, but lacks the fullness and sophistication that it should have. (15.5/20)

Very perfumed and sweet in the glass, strong aromas of vanilla bean, caramel, sweet spices, cinnamon, touch of minerals, powerful and enticing nose; surprisingly awkward in the mouth, there is plenty of flavor, but it seems to be unfocused; core of the wine is very dry with an almost agar-like texture; very citric, hints of oriental spices; this is an exotic wine, but clumsy at this stage; it might show better with more bottle age to allow some of the elements to come together more. (16 now but could go higher)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Rich and ripe nose, buttery and sweet, floral and very aromatic, slate, minerals; sweet and smooth in the mouth; ripe flavors that seem more advanced than the age of the wine, but this is not a flaw in the texture or the composition of the wine; there is also plenty of slate and mineral notes that underlie the richness giving the wine more body and structure than would otherwise be the case; lots of sweet lemons at the finish; elegant wine and very expressive. (18.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Beautiful nose, very aromatic, smooth and thick with a rich fabric, touches of menthol, lanolin, green herbs; sweet and ripe in the mouth with very well stated density; powerful and still restrained; seems to have latent energy not yet released; slow to emerge in the glass, but with more time reveals the presence of focused citrus fruit acidity; strong and forward at the end with silky textures; definitely better than many assume this vintage can produce. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and ripe aromas, fat, earthen, green herbs, green pepper, chalk; sweet fruit in the front of the mouth, touch of lime, but also some cabbage present in the mouth; this is a substantial wine with considerable heft; quite intense and full with a long finish; lots of sweet lime flavors here. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
The first nose is a bit odd, not unpleasant, just odd, with aromas of peat and sour mash that seem to lack sweetness and are more steely than not, but this gradually gives way to sweeter aromas of cookie dough and ripe fruit impregnated with talc and herbs; surprisingly simple in the mouth; all of the flavors of this wine appear to be on the surface; there is no depth; pleasant enough but not compelling; the finish has some interest in its somewhat spicy allspice-flavored elements, but the overall effect is disappointing. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Extremely sweet nose at first, but then it calmed down to show more complex aromas of smoke, licorice, peat, while retaining a very floral character of white acacia blossoms; smooth and lemony with intense flavors; this wine seems not to suffer from the lower acidity of this vintage; good citrus fruit presence adds freshness and structure; good finish with complex flavors, even bringing into play hints of coal and earth along with the lemon peel and citrus fruits. (18.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and intense nose, very powerful but seductive, deep, with complex aromas of peat, smoke, bacon fat, lemon peel and grapefruit; sweet and ripe in the mouth with powerful flavors of lemons and citrus fruits, sweet but citric with complex flavors that go back and forth between candied fruit and citric tartness; hints of earth and peat in the mouth; long, powerful finish, great length. (19/20)
