There is an unmistakable scent of rubber on the nose, but also cinnamon and forest floor. The dusty palate is broad and characterized by some animal qualities, raspberry and vanilla. The finish is redolent with charred oak, which makes it seem heavy.

A complex young Pinot Noir, high in mouthwatering acidity and bone dry. The tartness gives the cherry and cranberry fruit a refreshing sour candy taste. Not an ager, but give it a good decant.

Alsace specialist C&C has a spotty track record with Pinot. This one is dry and crisp in acidity, with easy cherry, black raspberry, pomegranate, cola and spice flavors wrapped into a silky texture. At its best now and for a couple of years.

Made Alsatian style, with beautifully etched peach and apricot fruit and zesty acidity. The residual sugar is a modest 0.2% but there’s a rich, honeyed feeling to this dry wine. Finishes spicy and clean.

One of the nicer Rieslings in California, from specialists in the Alsatian style. It’s fully dry, yet with ripe, delicious flavors of crisp apples and peaches, and a tangy aftertaste of minerals and petrol. Bright acidity makes this wine clean and zesty.

Made Alsatian style, quite dry and crisp, with bright acidity. What’s great about it is the fully ripened flavor, which ranges from peaches to tropical fruits, wildflowers, spices and honey. A wonderful sipper that will be great with spicy Asian fare.

Try this next time you’re looking for something rich like a Chardonnay, streamlined like a Sauvignon Blanc, but different. It has the creamy opulence of Chard, with honeyed melon, pineapple and peach custard flavors. Yet there’s firm acidity and a minerally core that gives the wine backbone.
