Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
What’s puzzling about this wine is why, given the pedigree of the vines, it was so quickly made and rushed to market. It is not a distinctive wine, but a rustic one, dry and berryish. Cline could have done better.

Here’s a simple, jammy wine, packed with ripe blackberry, cola, coffee and peppery spice flavors, with a dry, tart finish. Most of it comes from the Sonoma Coast appellation.

High in acids and dry, this wine has a sharp bite. It’s big in blackberry jam and cherry jelly flavors, with a smooth, velvety texture and a rustic finish.

Lusciously sweet, a deeply colored wine saturated with ripe flavors of plums, blackberries and mocha. There are some well-etched tannins and a crisp streak of acidity to help it cut through a well-marbled steak or prime rib.

Cline has access to some pretty old vineyards in Contra Costa, the “opposite coast” from San Francisco, and they do a nice job of crafting the grapes into easy, relatively inexpensive wines. This one is upfront in jammy cherry, blueberry and chocolate fruit, and finishes dry and spicy.

Here’s a rustic, country-style wine that’s very well made, and offers lots to like. It’s a bit rough in the mouth, but has flavors of dark stone fruits. Finishes dry and balanced.

Rather sweet in fruity extract, with upfront cherry, chocolate, cassis and sweet anise flavors. The texture is sensationally soft and beguiling. Try with pork tenderloin in plum sauce.

From the Zinmaster Cline brothers comes a ripe, elegant beauty. Packed with raspberry, dark chocolate, tobacco, nutmeg, clove, and a kiss of vanilla-scented oak, it’s complex and lush. Very dry, very strong and very interesting.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cline has done a very nice job with this Zin, which comes partly from Lodi. Although it’s very soft and won’t age, it has a velvet and silk purity that carries rich flavors of cherries, raspberries, licorice, sweet vanilla and pepper.

Pretty good price for an old-vine Mourvèdre wine of this quality. It’s dry and medium-bodied, with a rich array of cherry, mu shu plum sauce, coffee and tamari flavors. The more you sip, the more you like it.
