Classic Highlands Chard, with very bright, pure, focused aromas and flavors of tropical fruits and spices. The flavors are strong and clean. Oak adds shadings of smoke, vanilla and buttered toast, and there’s something creamy and leesy in the texture. A fine wine of some complexity, at a fair price.

The briar-packed, smoky nose is attractive. The fruit is light and features characteristics akin to strawberries and cherries, with a touch of chocolate. The finish carries a note of tobacco; it’s kind of rustic. It’s weight, which is medium at best, ensures that it will work lighter fare.

Carmel Valley is a little pocket of sunny warmth in cool Monterey County, and it’s been known as a good source of Cabernet for years. This example got ripe and expressive, with forward berry flavors and a hint of oak. It’s too soft and so drinks a little flabby. That’s its biggest problem, along with a weak finish.

Here’s a good, rich Chardonnay, distinctive for its ripe array of tropical fruits, pears, peaches and oriental spices. It feels crisp and clean in the mouth, and finishes rich and spicy.
