Heady and floral, but also kind of closed, tight and generic on the nose. The palate packs in the extract, acidity and tannins to create a tough but loud flavor set of blackberry, pepper and licorice. Pointed on the finish and less friendly than past vintages.

A bit of marmalade and violets accent the bold, dark nose. Not at all subtle, with syrupy berry flavors offset by a whack of bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and plenty of oak on the finish. A ripe, untamed, candied wine that will settle with more bottle age. Imported by Dourthe USA.

This new Malbec comes courtesy of Michel Rolland, who has shown his skill before with the grape, at Yacochuya in Cafayete. This wine is sweet and lush, with plum and cassis in droves. In the mouth, it’s round, textured and masculine, yet devoid of hard tannins. High in alcohol (14.5%) but not hot. Derived from seven Mendoza vineyards.

Pure and inky. The nose offers graphite, earth and a huge amount of blackberry. The ripe palate is deep and defined, with a layer or two of complexity. Finishes with oak shadings, a splash of mint, and chocolate. Because the vineyards that yield this wine are still young, expect only better things in the future. Congratulations to Clos leader Michel Rolland and his gang of seven.

Clos de los Siete, the amalgmated product of Michel Rolland’s Uco Valley wine commune, is rich, round and ripe, with deep aromas and trimmings like polished oak and minerality. The wine is proper, medium to full in size, and full of blackberry, plum and cocoa. No hiccups, pure fruit and complexity make this stellar for the price.

Never in its young history has the Clos 7 blend tasted this good right away. The ’06 shows excellent young aromas of charcoal, black pepper and blackberry. The palate preserves that pepper and coffee blackness as it strides across ripe, satisfying blackberry and cassis flavors. It’s 45% Malbec and then smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Made by Michel Rolland and the other owners of the Clos de los Siete vineyards.

The Wine Advocate The 2006 Clos de los Siete is a slightly different blend with 50% Malbec, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Syrah. Opaque purple-colored, it has a similar expressive nose including fragrant plum, blueberry, and black cherry. Ripe, sweet, and seamless, it admirably hides its tannin under all the fruit. It will evolve for several years but who will have the willpower to defer gratification? It is an awesome value. Score: 92. —Jay Miller, December 2007. The Wine Spectator A bit flashy in style, with raspberry and blackberry notes riding over briary tannins. The juicy, brambly finish has some nice grip. Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
