Very sweet nose with lots of “old-vine” aromatics, ripe fruit, plums, prunes, very perfumed; sweet and ripe in the mouth, prunes and ripe cherry fruit; quite earthen but not damaged; this seems like all pinot as well with classic mature flavors; not very complex or deep, but with classic definition. Unfortunately, quite oxidized and aged nose, sweet sherry and cooked fruit, herbs; maderized and obviously not perfect, but one can still taste the sweet fruit in the mouth; the wine can’t hold the flavors though and finishes dry and cooked. (NR)

Over the years, this has been one of my favorite wines, and unfortunately I drank all of mine several years ago, so I was happy to participate in this bottle; classic nose of earth and spices, intense and focused with hints of earth and metal shavings, pepper, sour mash, and ripe fruit; sweet and rich in the mouth, this has always been a big Clos de Vougeot with dense, thick, rich textures and flavors; loaded with black cherries and black plums; long and layered finish, stays in the mouth for what seems minutes; still a winner. Initially a lighter nose, but then gained more depth and definition as it sat in the glass; lots of sweet fruit, black cherries, caramel and floral notes, good focus and balance; plenty of vigor in this wine on the palate; lots of black cherry flavors; good depth, powerful flavors but at the same time refined and elegant; good sweet finish with balanced fruit flavors with the subtlety of an aged Burgundy. Another wonderful example of this appellation from a great older vintage; sweet and deep nose with lots of fruit and concentrated aromas, oriental spices, caramel, almond oil, with lots of perfumed floral notes; sweet and spicy, exotic, quite focused in the mouth; deep and rich with layers of ripe fruit and soft, integrated tannins; compared to the Gros wine above, this is more assertive and angular, but equally refined and elegant; long smooth finish that has a hot, spiced fruit nature to it; I will rate this one notch below the Gros just on personal prejudice for Gros wines. (19.5/20)

From Gene Glazer’s cellar, this wine was perfect and what one looks for in a Burgundy; great aromatics, exotic and enticing, sucks you right into the wine, black cherries, wood, earth, chocolate and cassis and all compete for attention on the nose; sweet, ripe and rich in the mouth, but with a perfect expression of the Pinot Noir grape; focused and precise, but with a lilt of naughtiness in the wine; long finish, totally committed. (20/20)

Another bottle of the “mystery” Clos Vougeot from Brian Platton’s case of this wine; sweet and ripe nose with lots of black cherry and earth aromas, old vine sweetness; very sweet and smooth in the mouth, lots of pepper; spicy; still nicely focused in the mouth; good finish. (16.5/20)

Sweet and very aromatic, aromas of caramel and plums, smoke and earth, but also a bit barnyardy and with hints of sour mash; sweet ripe fruit in the mouth, but marred in the presentation with a troubling metallic, hard edge; quite spicy and peppery in its presentation; thins out some at the finish, but still an appealing wine. (17/20)

Sweet and spicy nose, lots of herbs and earth, very sweet and candied aromas that suggest some added sugar, black pepper, deep aromas; very sweet and ripe in the mouth with layered fruit, but weighed down with big, clumsy dry tannins that undermine the balance of this wine; the flavors are fresh though, and clean, but there is a heavy-handed approach to this wine that results in a somewhat clumsy product. (16/20)

Wonderful, elegant nose with complex aromas of burnt wood, charcoal, smoke, sour mash, sweet cherries, later taking on a more perfumed and floral character that also has caramel and chocolate notes; wonderful sweet fruit in the mouth, spicy with layers of ripe black cherries; focused and very smooth, silky textures; long finish that is clean and fresh.
