92-94 Barrel sample. New wood aromas are mingled with black fruits. The wine is solid, but with sweet wood and fruit tannins, which are already integrating well. The fruit is deliciously ripe, with acidity only just showing.

88-90 A tarry, powerful wine, dominated by tannins, but still with enough complexity and ripe fruit to push it forward.

This estate seems to be going places, making in 2004 an impressively balanced wine that seems to walk a fine line just the right side of superripeness with consummate ease. It is elegant, yet powerful, dominated by a seamless combination of blackberry jelly fruits and dark, smoky tannins.

90-92 Barrel sample. Austere and mineral, this is a tight wine, held by bonds of tannin. The structure is based upon dark plum skins, as well as potentially rich fruit.

91–93 Under new management, this estate has improved dramatically. There are freshness and fragrant aromas from the black currant fruits. To finish, it is dry, but poised.

This was the last vintage at Clos Fourtet under the ownership of the Lurtons. They made fine wine, but the potential of the property was never quite realized. The wine just fails to excite: it is rich and concentrated with ripe tannins and some sweetness, but at the same time, there is a layer of acidity and structure which gives the wine a firm, solid shape.

Smoky and spicy aromas set the scene for a wine that plays on its wood and toast. These give a smooth texture to the berry fruits and dried raisins. At this stage in its development, the wine is still tight, but as it opens out its concentration will come through more, and the freshness of2006’s Merlot will show strongly.

95-97 Barrel sample. Black, dense fruits, licorice and dark chocolate over prunes and ripe figs. This is a spicy wine, with the acidity of the fruit forming a great balancing counterweight. Very complete.

94-96 Very dense wine, the dusty tannins floating through the black plum flavors. It's rich, concentrated, complex, with a great depth of flavor. This will always be powerful, while already balanced.

A perfumed, sweet wine, immediately attractive. Behind this friendly exterior is a dark core of firm tannins, along with spice, blackberries, and new wood—not too much, just right. This chateau is firmly back on form.
