Here’s a big, plummy wine with hints of dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean and grilled meat. It’s soft in the mouth, but not flabby, with decadently rich flavors of wild berries, cassis and chocolate. Very dry, but high alcohol creates sweet heat on the finish.

Smells pretty Rhônish, with peppery, floral and meaty notes layered over blackberry fruit. Winemaker Tim Spear’s entry-level Syrah boasts 16% alcohol but it’s not all that noticeable, balanced by just enough raspberry, blackberry and vanilla flavors.

Do we just not get this wine? Aromas are nice enough, starting with floral, minty scents and then delivering some mushroomy notes later on, but the flavors are sour and lean, finishing tangy and herbal.

A beautiful Syrah, complex and delicious, with lots of finesse, from Clos Mimi. Impresses for the depth of its plum, currant, chocolate, coffee, oak and spice flavors, and rich, sweet tannins. Right up there with the best of them, at a fair price.

Pretty rustic, with sweet-and-sour cherry-candy flavors and a sharp, acidic mouth-feel. But with the right meats and cheeses, it will do fine.
