appearance: clear, with a medium-deep intensity, and with the color of purple-ruby. nose: this bottle smelled unclean, as if it was corked...so that's something to consider. it was intense on the nose with aromas of red berries, violet, cloves, and hints of strawberry. palate: off-dry, with low acidity, medium tannins, and quite a high body. with flavors of blackberries, plum, liquorice. it had a long length. overall: i think this bottle was a bit corked, so take this review with a small grain of salt. the red berries are undeniable, and the finish is decent. it's a bit on the bland side, but it's solid, and can be paired with a variety of foods. i give it an 87.

Tastes kind of obviously new oaky, with all that vanilla and char framing cherry pie flavors. It’s a flattering, seductive Pinot, with a silky texture and firm acids, but it’s basically one-dimensional. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A flavorful, robust wine, made from Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Syrah grown in the winery’s estate vineyard in Calistoga. With wildly exuberant wild blackberry, red currant, tobacco, exotic Indian spice and sandalwood flavors, its tannins are brisk and firm. Calls for umami rich fare, such as beef stews, hard cheeses and upscale Mexican fare. Drink this interesting, fun wine now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
I like the dry balance, with its well-crafted tannins, brisk acidity and gentle touch of oak. But the taste is disappointingly thin, showing herb-dominated dill and tobacco, with just a splash of cherry fruit.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aromas of peach, pear, citrus and vanilla-smoke lead to a rich, complex wine, filled with lovely fruit flavors and spices. The texture is creamy smooth, with bright acids that make the wine lively and fresh. Long on the finish, and perfect with grilled shrimp.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Notable for richness and depth of flavor, the hallmarks of a well-grown and well-made wine. Show classic Napa tannins, ripe and firm, with deep, lush flavors of blackberries, black currants, cassis, anise and cedar. Very fine now, but young, and should develop bottle complexity through 2012.

Pretty standard Merlot. It’s dry and tannic, with blackberry, earth and cedar flavors. There are some unripe notes that approach asparagus. Drink now.

This is the winery’s Artist Series Cabernet, grown primarily in Calistoga, and it’s a good example of the 2006 vintage, which was not a strong one for Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine shows ripe flavors of blackberries and cherries, coated with plenty of new oak. It’s delicious, but soft and not suited to aging. Best now through 2012.

You can smell the new oak a mile away, powerful in char and smoky vanilla. Then the cassis hits you and the mind thinks, Great Cab. Rich, ripe and intense, dripping with blackcurrants and chocolate, but with firm tannins. Should be a keeper for years, but hard to resist its immediate charms.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This shows crisp acids and fine balance. It’s huge in blackberry and cherry fruit, but has the structural integrity and finesse that, quite simply, make it a very great Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now–2015.
