Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In a recent lineup of Australian sparklers, Clover Hill’s 2003 Brut was a standout, showing convincing toasty, autolytic notes layered over crisp apple and citrus flavors. It’s medium-bodied and slightly creamy in texture, with a long, crisp finish.

From Taltarni’s Tasmanian outpost, this is a plump, medium-bodied sparkler with ample complexity. Smoke, citrus and eggy, brioche notes mark the nose, while the palate adds crisp appley flavors. Finishes long, picking up hints of grapefruit as well.

Yellow peach fruit has underlying cured-meat flavors, which are hinted at on the nose. Mouthfeel is very foamy—it feels as though the wine dissolves when it hits your tongue. I like a little more substance in sparklers, but fans of superdelicate wines may feel differently.

A zippy, energized sparkler, with lots of grilled brioche, melon and apple notes that linger nicely on the finish. Has solid length and definition along with a fine mousse. A winner all round. Drink now or hold several years for more complexity.

Dust, apple, mushroom and toast aromas start things off, and reveal some stone fruit and talc on the palate. Its texture—moussey and frothy, rather than dry and crisp—reminds me of Cremant or Prosecco. 53% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 12% Pinot Meunier. Imported by Clos Du Val Wine.

Pretty golden hue with fine, lively bubbles. Made in the classic Champagne style from the three key Champers grapes and several years' bottle age sur-lie (on the yeast cells). Aromas and flavors of peach fuzz, almonds, bread crust, fresh field clover (not sure if it's the name suggesting that or what!), and white peach fruit. Very pretty, although not terrifically complex. Makes a good stand-in for California sparkling made in the Champagne style. Quite pleasant.
