Codorníu makes a consistent rosé Cava from Pinot Noir. It’s smoky and spicy, with cured meat aromas and a true earthy Pinot character. Flavors of orange are somewhat linear and monotone, but that one note is a good flavor, and a fresh and clean one as well.

Crisp and clean, thus it qualifies as a perfect apéritif wine. Secure in its apple and slate aromas and flavors, with a firm but persistent bead that fosters a fine mouthfeel. Best with nuts, olives, chips and especially seafood.

You’ll find plenty to like in this bubbly. The aromas are very refined and Champagnesque, with toast, lees, vanilla, spice, charcoal and a waft of citrus. The flavors are similarly of toast and mineral. This is not a fruit-driven wine. It’s a little rough around the edges; the bubbles are scoury, not refined. But the price is great, and it is a good value. Should be easy to find, with 90,000 cases produced.

Smooth and crisp, with aromas of apple and white pepper offsetting sweeter butterscotch and caramel notes. Feels right on the palate, and tastes good. The zesty spiced-apple flavor is just what the doctor ordered. A lasting finish seals the deal.

Robust and smoky to the nose, with a tight palate that drifts first toward light citrus and then toward sweeter almond candy. Snappy and fresh, with a fuller body and some style.

Pinot Noir-based cavas are touchy; sometimes they take on a rough, peppery personality that some might find offputting. This wine does that, but only to an extent. The nose pushes peach pit and campfire aromas, while the palate features dry fruits like papaya and melon, but with cinnamon and pepper shadings. Good mouthfeel and well made, but the flavors and aromas require some getting used to.

Fairly basic on the nose, where there’s apple cider and a spot of yeasty richness. The palate is easygoing as well, with less than lively bubbles but nice sour apple and citrus flavors. Finishes in an acid-driven fashion, with green apple as the lasting note.

Dry and toasty, with corn-like aromas. The palate is thin and overly simple, with bare hints of apple, apricot and grapefruit. The finish is dull and weak. Definitely a wine that lacks soul.

Colorful and pretty to look at, but a little sweet. The nose has a sweet, maple syrup element along with dry berry fruit aromas. It’s healthy and fresh in the mouth, with citrus, cranberry and raspberry flavors. Simple and nice for easy drinking.

This 100% Pinot Noir is from Catalonia, in northeastern Spain. A vivid strawberry-pink colored wine, with toast aromas, followed on the palate with vivid, fresh red fruits, a layer of acidity and some caramel flavors.
